McLennan Redpath Project - News of the Day

In October and November, temperatures may fluctuate in the McLennan-Redpath Library Complex as HVAC crews balance the building's air pressure and switch the entire system from manual to automatic. All work will be performed out of the mechanical room.

Important Information | Terrace Project: The north side of the pedestrian walkway between the McLennan and Redpath Library Buildings is now accessible.

Please note:

  • Students and staff with mobility issues who wish to access the McLennan Library Building are asked to enter through the McGill Single Service Point (3415 McTavish Street).

Important Information | HVAC Project: The HAC project is now 95% complete. McLennan and Redpath units are now functional and temperatures have stabilized. As of August 8, contractors will begin to rebalance units and unmask thermostats in order for users to modify room temperatures if needed. A full inspection will be done in all areas prior to completion. Please report any discrepancies in temperature to the renovation team.

Please note:

  • The collection remains accessible.
  • An alternate work space will be made available to any McLennan-Redpath Library staff member who finds the environment physically uncomfortable. Please contact the Renovation Team or your supervisor for more details.
  • Due to raised noise levels, library users may wish to study in other buildings during the construction project.
  • All schedules are subject to change.
  • Our apologies for the inconvenience and thank you for your cooperation.

Message from the Dean

February 22, 2011

Dear Colleagues,

Creating a safe, welcoming environment is essential to providing excellence in library service. To that end, there are two exciting renovation projects coming up that I would like to share with you. First, the McLennan-Redpath complex is scheduled to undergo a much needed HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) upgrade. Secondly, we will begin the first phase of a three year project to renovate the exterior terrace around the perimeter of the Library complex including the outdoor walkway and staircase between McLennan and Redpath buildings. Both projects are seriously overdue and will solve many of the deferred maintenance problems experienced by our students and staff including: extreme heat or cold; an unbalanced heating/cooling environment; expensive heating/cooling costs associated with 50 year old HVAC equipment; extensive leaking into the ground floor and basements of both buildings causing damage to our collections and study spaces; and a seriously flawed, uneven walkway and stairs between the two buildings.

The two multi-million dollar deferred maintenance projects will be executed simultaneously over the upcoming months. Both projects will take 4-6 months and should be completed by the beginning of the Fall 2011 term. A comprehensive schedule and project plan is being developed by the Facilities Project Teams responsible for the work and a communication plan is being developed by the library to keep everyone in the building informed and involved. Additional details regarding both projects will be announced at the next Dean’s Corner on Thursday, March 3rd from 9-11am in Rare Books and Special Collections. All construction projects involve some challenges. Your feedback at every stage of these projects is integral and will inform current upgrades and future projects. Questions and suggestions for improvements are welcome at all times, especially at the Dean’s Corner.

Best,

C. Colleen Cook, PhD Trenholme Dean of Libraries
