Subject scope
The Department of Chemistry offers degrees at the Bachelors (B.Sc), Masters (M.Sc), and Ph.D. levels. Undergraduate level chemistry is required by most science and health science programs at McGill.
The scope of chemistry collection development at Schulich Library includes all fundamental areas of chemistry. The aim is to support a research level collection in the areas of organic, inorganic, theoretical, physical, and analytical chemistry. Research themes in this department are interdisciplinary and are classified as follows:
Some research centres of importance to this department include the Pulp and Paper Research Centre, Polymer McGill, McGill Institute for Advanced Materials, McGill Nanotools Facility, and the Centre for Self-Assembled Chemical Structures (CSACS).
Emerging areas of chemistry vital to current research include:
- nanoscience/nanomaterials
- advanced or "new" materials
- biorganic and bioinorganic chemistry
- computational chemistry
Collection development
General collection guidelines
Languages
English is preferred. Works published in a language other than English will be acquired if the author or the content is of sufficient importance.
Chronological Coverage
Current monographic titles are purchased. The collection provides comprehensive coverage of older materials thanks to the age of the collection and the department at McGill.
Geographical Coverage
No restriction.
McGill resources
The Life Sciences Library collects most pharmacy, medicinal chemistry, radiology, and other medical applications of chemistry.
Macdonald Campus Library collects in the area of agricultural and food science chemistry.
