Dictionaries and encyclopedias

Handbooks

Other reference material

2. Searching the library catalogue

Use the basic word(s) anywhere or advanced keyword search in the library catalogue. You can search using words like - mining, engineering, rock, mechanics, planning, mine?, plan? etc.

Search tips for the library catalogue

Truncation symbol: ? e.g. mine? will retrieve catalogue records containing the words mine, mines, mineral, mineralogy, etc.
Phrase searching: "___" e.g. "rock mechanics" will retrieve catalogue records containing the phrase rock mechanics
Boolean operators: (), AND, OR, NOT
default: AND
e.g. underground AND (mine OR mining) will retrieve catalogue records containing the word underground AND either mine OR mining

You can also browse the catalogue, or the shelves at the following call numbers:

  • TN1-997

    Mining Engineering. Metallurgy

    • TN263-271

Mineral deposits. Metallic ore deposits. Prospecting

    • TN275-325

      Practical mining operations. Safety measures

    • TN331-347

Mine transportation, haulage and hoisting. Mining machinery

    • TN400-580

Ore deposits and mining of particular metals

    • TN600-799

      Metallurgy

    • TN799.5-948

      Nonmetallic minerals

    • TN950-997

      Building and ornamental stones

3.1 Core databases for mining engineering

  • Compendex
    A comprehensive, interdisciplinary engineering database
  • GeoRef
Provides access to the geoscience literature of the world

3.2 Additional databases for mining engineering

Databases for related subjects

You can also search the full text of core journals:

  • ScienceDirect
Full text database of the journals published by Elsevier, also allows citation searching

Most of the Library's licensed electronic resources, such as databases, full-text online journals and e-books, are restricted to McGill students, faculty, staff and other authorized users of the McGill Library. Find out about accessing the Library's online resources from on and off campus.

MINE DESIGN & FEASIBILITY STUDY PROJECT

A Tour of Information Resources for Researching Mine Design & Feasibility
(lecture slides for MIME 426 - Jan. 2014)

1. Finding information on Canadian mines or mineral deposits

Geology, location, and economics

Government policies

Articles and reports

2. Locating the complete text of references

  • Look for the Find Full Text button when searching databases. Click on this button to link to our catalogue.

  • Search the McGill WorldCat Catalogue or the McGill Classic Catalogue to find journals or books, whether in print or electronic format.

  • McGill students and staff may order articles and books that are not available at McGill using COLOMBO

3. Finding mineral market conditions

4. Finding factual information or overviews on mining topics

E-book collections

5. Finding feasibility studies or articles on a topic

  • Compendex - provides references to conference papers and journal articles in engineering; can also select to search GEOBASE at the same time

  • CBCA Complete - provides references to Canadian publications

  • GeoRef - provides references to a variety of publications in the geosciences
