Join Professor Jacqueline Reid-Walsh for interactive glimpses into the fascinating Sheila Bourke Collection of historical children’s books. There are over 2000 items in the collection, which is especially rich in illustrated books from the “golden age” of book illustration from the 19th and to the mid-20th centuries. From chapbooks, and “toy books” to deluxe gift books, the collection is a treasure trove of intended for a wide range of child readers and viewers. The focus will be on movable and interactive books and on items that highlight book making.

Bio

Dr. Jacqueline Reid-Walsh, Pennsylvania State University

Dr. Jacqueline Reid-Walsh studies the connections between old media and new media. Her research interests center on historical movable books created for and by children. Her current research project involves locating, documenting, digitizing and creating interactive 3-D simulations of old fragile materials. Her most recent book is Interactive Books: Playful Media before Pop-Ups (2017).
