Renovation projects set to begin June 3rd in McLennan Redpath Complex (Humanities and Social Sciences Library)
McLennan Redpath Terrace Project – Phase 3
The third and final phase of the McLennan-Redpath Terrace Renovation Project is slated to start on June 3rd, 2013 and is scheduled to be completed by the end of the Fall term. Demolition and reconstruction work will take place between 7am and 3pm, with heavy drilling to occur between 7 and 10am. The scope of work for this project includes the completion of the resurfacing of the terrace and restructuring of the supporting walls.

McLennan main floor electrical shutdown, Sunday, May 12, 2013
There will be an electrical shutdown in the McLennan Library Building Main Floor on Sunday May 12,2013 from 6am to 8pm, in order to complete a panel upgrade to the electrical framework. The shutdown will involve the area behind the elevators in the McLennan Lobby only. Access to computers will be available in the Cyberthèque. Self-check machines and catalogues will be accessible throughout the McLennan-Redpath Library Complex.

Video recordings from the one-day symposium, Meetings with Books: Raymond Klibansky, Special Collections and the Library in the 21st Century, that was held at McGill on March 20, 2013, are now available. Webcast recordings of the opening remarks, both keynotes and the panel discussions have been posted for viewing online or downloading.

'Neurological Laboratories’ to Interdisciplinary ‘Centres of Brain Research’: Otfrid Foerster, Wilder Penfield, and Early Neuroscience in Breslau and Montreal
Under specific consideration of the theoretical approaches and practical research influences of “interdisciplinarity” in neuroscientific research, this presentation addresses a time period and a subject of investigation that has only marginally been dealt with in the history of medicine and neurosciences: the influences and the context of the creation of early centres of neuroscientific research at the beginning of the 20th century.
New digital collection: The Archives of the Civil Code Revision Office
In 1955, the Quebec legislature created the Civil Code Revision Office (C.C.R.O.) and assigned to it the monumental task of revising the Civil Code of Lower Canada to bring it in line with the social, political, and economic realities affecting private law relations in Quebec.
The Archives of the Civil Code Revision Office makes available approximately 4000 documents consisting of working papers, correspondence, minutes of meetings, and internal memoranda from the C.C.R.O., mostly from the period of 1969-1979.

Many if not most rare book libraries have a long and complicated history of acquisitions that reflects the varied interests of collectors and benefactors, of librarians and scholars, and by happenstance and serendipity. It is not just the individual titles that carry information; the histories of the collections do so as well and it is often in exploring these histories that new understandings are born. How, then, are we to understand and explore these diverse and, indeed, disparate collections?

A History of the Islamic Studies Library: 60th Anniversary
The Islamic Studies Library (ISL) was founded in 1952 in conjunction with the Institute of Islamic Studies (IIS). Dr. W.C. Smith, founder and first Director of the IIS sought to give greater definition to the field of Islamic studies. The library has grown from a collection of 250 books to 125,000 volumes. On display are some of the treasures from its collection and history. For example in 1959 the former President of Tunisia, Habib Bourghuiba visited the IIS and ISL and donated a Qur'ānic leaf, in 1971 the former Shah of Iran sent a personal invitation to then Director of the IIS, Dr.
