“Close to a million people lost their lives and several million lost their homelands forever when India and Pakistan were partitioned. In the midst of the horror that Hindus, Muslims and Sikhs inflicted on each other there were also redeeming stories of the love that bound these communities together—stories we cling to, so we may retain our faith in the human spirit . Milange Babey Ratan De Mele Te is one such story.

Exhibit: Arabic lithographed books

Tue, 2014-04-01 00:00 - Tue, 2014-09-30 18:00
Morrice Hall : Islamic Studies Library, 3485 rue McTavish Montreal Quebec Canada , H3A 0E1

The Islamic Studies Library is pleased to display a new exhibition featuring a fascinating selection of Arabic lithographed books from the Islamic Rare Books Collection.

Invented in Germany in 1796, the printing technique called “lithography” remained a subsidiary method for book production in Europe, but quickly spread to the Muslim world. Lithographic printing consists of writing by hand on a smooth limestone plate, on which ink is then applied, to produce a printed page. The word "lithography" comes from the ancient Greek "lithos" (λιθος) meaning “stone”.
