Library Assessment plan

Purpose

Library assessment is linked to the McGill Library’s mission to advance teaching, learning, research and community service by providing outstanding collections, access to the world of knowledge, excellence in service and an appropriate library environment, all while focusing on user needs. Assessment is also linked to the Library’s strategic priorities as described in the Strategic Intentions.

The assessment plan is a document to demonstrate the investments made by Library branches, departments, committees, and individuals on assessment activities. In addition, collaborations with units from elsewhere in the University, such as Planning and Institutional Analysis, and Student Services can be included. Assessment projects may be proposed by anyone in the Library, while the Library Assessment Advisory Committee can provide a supporting role, and potentially also provide resources and tools to this end. The assessment plan will therefore help coordinate projects, avoid conflicts, and identify complementarities. It provides an overview of all assessment activities completed, underway, and planned.

Format

The assessment plan is a living document. It serves as a framework in which ongoing assessment activities and projects can be added and updated. Details regarding specific assessment projects are to be included in separate documents, and will include information about the project lead, scope (i.e., the processes), timeline, costs, and anticipated outcomes (i.e., the measures). Keeping this information updated and accessible will be the responsibility of the Assessment Librarian, who will work with the Library Assessment Advisory Committee and the Library Dean’s Cabinet to update the plan quarterly.

Types of assessment

Assessment activities tend to have one or more of three purposes:

  1. Needs assessment: data gathering and analysis to provide evidence for decision making and action (e.g., usability testing of catalogue).
  2. Service quality assessment: data gathering and analysis to evaluate the quality or effectiveness of a product or service for ongoing improvement (e.g., LibQUAL+ for service quality, assessment of single service point).
  3. Evidence of value: data gathering and analysis to justify or defend the library or specific service (e.g., MINES for usage of electronic resources).
