Biographie

Robert Leckey enseigne le droit constitutionnel et le droit de la famille, et mène des recherches dans ces domaines ainsi qu’en droit comparé. Il travaille présentement sur un livre qui s'intitule « Bills of Rights in the Common Law ».

De 2002 à 2003, il a été l’auxiliaire juridique du juge Michel Bastarache à la Cour suprême du Canada. Boursier de la Fondation Trudeau de 2003 à 2006, il a obtenu un doctorat de la Faculté de droit de l'Université de Toronto. Sa dissertation, qui lui a valu la médaille Alan Marks pour la meilleur thèse doctorale de 2006, a été publiée par University of Toronto Press en 2008, sous le titre « Contextual Subjects: Family, State, and Relational Theory ». En 2005-2006, il a travaillé comme chercheur invité au Centre de recherche en éthique de l'Université de Montréal (CRÉUM). Il s’est joint à la Faculté de droit en juillet 2006 et a été nommé le titluaire d'une chaire William Dawson par l'Université McGill en 2011. Pendant son année sabbatique en 2012-2013, il est un invité spécial de l'Institut d'études canadiennes de McGill.

Membre du Barreau du Haut-Canada depuis 2003, il siège aux comités de rédaction des Ateliers de l'éthique, de la Revue canadienne droit et société et de la Revue d'études constitutionnelles. De 2008 à 2011, il a présidé le McGill Equity Subcommittee on Queer People. En 2010 et 2011, il a agi comme directeur de la recherche pour la Commission d'enquête sur le processus de nominations des juges du Québec (la Commission Bastarache). Il est président d'Égale Canada et du Comité des affaires juridiques de cet organisme.

Robert Leckey a gagné le Prix de la Fondation du Barreau du Québec (2007), le Prix du concours d'essai juridique de l’Association canadienne des professeur(e)s de droit, le Prix John W. Durnford d’excellence en enseignement de l’Association des étudiant(e)s en droit de McGill (2009), le Prix Canada de l'Académie internationale de droit comparé (2010) et le Prix de la principale d’excellence en enseignement (2010).

Il a reçu un Chaire William Dawson de l'Université McGill en 2011.
