Biography

Frédéric Bachand is an Associate Professor of Law at McGill University, where he teaches in the areas of legal interpretation, arbitration, mediation, international investment, civil procedure and evidence. He has also been a Visiting Research Scholar and a Visiting Associate Professor at the National University of Singapore's Faculty of Law.

Professor Bachand, who currently holds a Norton Rose Faculty Scholarship in Arbitration and Commercial Law, came to McGill after having practiced law for several years with the law firm of Ogilvy Renault in Montreal. He holds doctoral degrees from Université Panthéon-Assas (Paris II) and Université de Montréal, as well as an LL.M. from the University of Cambridge. Prior to living in England, he served as a law clerk to Justice Gérard V. La Forest of the Supreme Court of Canada.

His award-winning scholarship focuses on domestic and international arbitration, with a particular emphasis on the role national courts play in the arbitral process. An active member of McGill's Private Justice and Rule of Law research team (mcgill.ca/pjrl), Professor Bachand is the founder and general editor of the Model Arbitration Law Database (www.maldb.org) as well as of a bilingual website on Quebec arbitration law which was launched in 2004 (www.mcgill.ca/arbitration). He is also one of three experts who were retained by the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law to contribute to its Digest of Case Law on the Model Law on International Commercial Arbitration.

Formerly a co-general editor of the Stockholm International Arbitration Review, a co-director of the McGill Summer Program in Arbitration and a member of the NAFTA Advisory Committee on Private Commercial Disputes, Professor Bachand is currently a member of the Scientific Committee of the Revue de l'arbitrage, the Academic Council of the Institute for Transnational Arbitration, the World Bank’s Arbitrating Disputes Expert Consultative Group, ICC Canada and the arbitration committee of the Institut de médiation et d'arbitrage du Québec. He is also a director of FRANCARBI, a board member of the Canadian Civil Liberties Association, as well as a National Correspondent for the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law.

A member of the Quebec Bar since 1995, Professor Bachand serves as an arbitrator in both domestic and international cases. He has been appointed on several occasions by the International Court of Arbitration of the International Chamber of Commerce, the world's leading international arbitration institution, and he is an accredited arbitrator of the Institut de médiation et d'arbitrage du Québec. He frequently acts as a consultant to private and public entities, and he has provided expert advice on Quebec and Canadian law in foreign judicial and arbitral proceedings. As a member of the Supreme Court of Canada Advocacy Institute, he regularly serves as a judge in mock hearings designed to assist counsel who are preparing to argue an appeal before the Supreme Court of Canada.

Professor Bachand has been extensively involved in law reform and judicial education in fields such as international arbitration, private international law, civil procedure and evidence. He has been a guest speaker at several workshops organized by the National Judicial Institute of Canada. He has also participated in law reform and judicial education initiatives undertaken in several foreign countries, including China, Russia, Vietnam, Turkey, Haiti, Rwanda, Burkina Faso, Singapore, the Central African Republic, Bangladesh, South Sudan, Morocco, Egypt and Georgia.
