Welcome to incoming graduate students starting in Fall 2016!

Welcome to the Faculty of Law at McGill University.

In anticipation of your upcoming graduate studies, please carefully read the information below.

If you have received a letter of offer of admission, please make sure to read Newly admitted students to the graduate programs for important information.

International students are strongly encouraged to consult the Pre-Arrival Guide by the International Student Services. They also host orientation activities for new international students.  

Lectures begin on September 2, 2016 - September 2 will follow a Monday schedule. See important dates.

Registration

Registration for the Fall 2016 and Winter 2017 academic year for new graduate students opens on Minerva as of July 5, 2016 (9:00 AM - Montreal time).

  • Official registration period: July 5, 2016 to August 14, 2016; otherwise a late registration fee will be charged.
  • Register for BOTH the Fall 2016 and Winter 2017 terms (Note for Graduate Certificate students: Please register for the Fall 2016 term only)

+ Fall 2016 = 201609, CRN # 2334

+ Winter 2017 = 201701, CRN # 2262

  • Log into Minerva > Student Menu > Registration Menu > Step 2: Search Class Schedule and Add Course Sections > Select a term (Fall 2016) > Click Submit > Select REGN - Registration for Subject > Enter RCGR in Course Number > Click Get Course Sections at bottom of page > Check off the box for CRN 2334 > Follow instructions (Repeat this process for Winter 2017, choosing CRN 2262)
  • Register for all compulsory courses listed on your Course selection form (see below).
  • Register for any 500 or 600 level elective courses you wish to take in the Faculty of Law. (Refer to the Course Offerings below.)
  • Please also review the information posted on the Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies (GPS) website regarding registration and orientation.
  • All incoming graduate students must complete a mandatory on-line Academic Integrity Tutorial on Minerva.

Please review the following documents in order to assist you with registration and course selection:

Advising

All newly admitted LL.M. and GC students will meet with the members of the Graduate Programs Office (GPO) for a group advising session. Students must register for relevant courses prior to attending the advising session. The session will take place on (please arrive 15 minutes early):

Thursday, September 1, 2016, 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM (Room 312, New Chancellor Day Hall, 3644 Peel)

All newly admitted D.C.L. students will meet with the Associate Dean for a group advising session on the following dates/times; please contact our office at grad [dot] law [at] mcgill [dot] ca to schedule your appointment before August 5, 2016:

Monday, August 29 10:00 AM or 2:00 PM
Tuesday, August 30 10:00 AM or 2:00 PM
Wednesday, August 31 10:00 AM or 2:00 PM

Moreover, please bring the following documents to your advising session:

  • Course selection form (links below), duly completed and signed
  • Printed copy of MINERVA transcript

Welcome and Orientation

Each year, the Faculty of Law and the Graduate Law Students Association welcome new students and help them get settled in. McGill University also provides information and support to welcome graduate students from around the world.

Schedule of Events

A number of orientation events are hosted by the Graduate Law Students Association (GLSA) and the Faculty to welcome new graduate students and introduce them to McGill, the law community, and the city of Montreal.

As such, immediately following the LL.M. and GC advising session on September 1, all graduate students (GC, LL.M., and D.C.L.) are asked to attend the following orientation events (Room 312, New Chancellor Day Hall, 3644 Peel Street):

11:00 AM - 12:30 PM Various presentations - SKILLSETS, library, etc.
12:30 PM - 2:00 PM Welcome lunch - food and drinks provided for all!
2:00 PM - 3:00 PM Meet your GLSA representatives

Moreover, a graduate student will be available on August 29, 30, and 31 (10:00 AM - 12:00 PM and 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM) in the Graduate Students Lounge (Room 304, New Chancellor Day Hall) to assist new students with registration and answer any questions and/or concerns.
