Welcome new incoming graduate students starting Fall 2014

Welcome to the Faculty of Law at McGill University. In anticipation of your upcoming graduate studies, please read carefully the information below.

If you have received a letter of offer of admission, please make sure to read Newly admitted students to the graduate programs for important information.

International students are strongly encouraged to consult the Pre-Arrival Guide by the International Student Services.  They also host orientation activities for new international students.  

Lectures begin September 2, 2014.  See important dates.

Registration for the Fall 2014 and Winter 2015 academic year for new graduate students opens on Minerva as of July 8, 2014.

  • Official registration period: July 8, 2014 to August 14, 2014; otherwise a late registration fee will be charged.
  • Register for BOTH the Fall 2014 and Winter 2015 terms (Note for Graduate Certificate students: Please register for the Fall 2014 term only)


- Fall 2014 = 201409, CRN # 2334

- Winter 2015 = 201501, CRN # 2262

  • Log into Minerva > Student Menu > Registration Menu > Step 2: Search Class Schedule and Add Course Sections > Select a term (Fall 2014) > Click Submit > Select REGN - Registration for Subject > Enter RCGR in Course Number > Click Get Course Sections at bottom of page > Check off the box for CRN 2334 > Follow instructions (Repeat this process for Winter 2015, choosing CRN 2262)
  • Register for all compulsory courses listed on your Course selection form (see below).
  • Register for any 500 or 600 level elective courses you wish to take in the Faculty of Law. (Refer to Course Offerings List below)
  • Please also review the information posted on the Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies (GPS) website regarding Registration and Orientation.
  • All incoming graduate students this fall must complete a mandatory on-line Academic Integrity Tutorial on Minerva.

Please review the following materials in order to assist you with registration and course selection:


All newly admitted D.C.L. and LL.M. students will meet with the members of the Graduate Programs Office (GPO) for a group advising session.  Students must register for relevant courses prior to attending the advising session.  The sessions will take place as follows (please arrive 15 minutes early):

  • D.C.L. students: Friday, August 29, 10 a.m. – 12 Noon (Room 316, NCDH)
  • LL.M. students: The following 3 sessions will be held.  Please choose your preferred session by completing the sign-up form.
    • Thursday, August 28, 2 p.m. – 4 p.m. (Room 312, NCDH)
    • Friday, August 29, 2 p.m. - 4 p.m. (Room 312, NCDH)
    • Wednesday, September 3, 1 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. (Room 316, NCDH)
  • Graduate Certificate students: Please contact GPO via grad [dot] law [at] mcgill [dot] ca (email) to set up an advising appointment.

NCDH refers to New Chancellor Day Hall, 3644 Peel Street, Montreal.


 Please bring the following documents to your advising session:

  • Course selection form (links below), duly completed and signed
  • Printed copy of MINERVA transcript

Welcome and Orientation

Each year, the Faculty of Law and the Graduate Law Students Association welcome new students and help them get settled in. McGill University also provides information and support so as to welcome graduate students from around the world.

Schedule of Events

A number of orientation events are hosted by the Graduate Law Students Association (GLSA) and the Faculty to welcome new graduate students and introduce them to the Law community and the city of Montreal. You are all encouraged to part take in these activities!

Message from the GLSA: Orientation 2014 is coordinated by the GLSA and the LSA and will be attended by graduate and undergraduate students, although grad students will have a choice about which events they would like to take part in- you can choose as few or as many as you like! Information about how to register and pay for the 10 day orientation package is set out in the LSA handbook [.pdf]. Any questions that aren't covered by the handbook can be directed to members of the GLSA who will be on campus and ready to answer your questions about McGill from 25 August 2014- come and see us in the Graduate Students Lounge, 3rd Floor NCDH.
