If you have received a letter of admission from us, welcome to the McGill undergraduate law program! You are among a select group of students hailing from a variety of backgrounds and life experiences who have demonstrated great intellectual capacity, curiosity, social commitment, political insight, leadership, ability to work in teams, and potential for growth. Your future professors and your fellow upper-year students look forward to meeting you.
Students admitted for September 2011: the orientation materials are now available on the Student Affairs website: see Law Studies: Orientation.
Your letter of admission came with a package containing important documents. Read your Admissions Package completely and carefully as soon as possible. It contains critical information on what you need to know and what you must do.
You will also need to mail in some legal documents that affect your tuition and registration status. If McGill does not have proof of residency documents, you will be charged international student tuition fees. As part of your Admissions Package, you are asked to consult the Legal documents that affect your tuition and registration status page on the Registration, student records and exams web site.
In the month of March, the Faculty of Law's Admissions office organises an information session for candidates who have received an offer. Candidates get a tour of the faculty, meet the dean, vice-deans and professors, attend a short class in law, and pepper current McGill law students with questions.
Candidates who are offered admission have a period of six weeks to accept or decline the offer of admission. This delay shrinks however as we move closer to the end of the cycle of admissions. If no response is received upon expiration of the delay, the offer will be cancelled. Instructions on how to accept the offer are found in the Admissions Package.

If you are currently registered in another program at McGill, you may encounter some difficulties accepting our offer via Minerva. These difficulties may occur because the student information system detects a conflict between your current program and the B.C.L./LL.B. program to which you have been admitted.
If you are enrolled in an undergraduate program at McGill, the conflict may arise because you have not yet declared the date on which you intend to graduate from your current program. You can declare this date on Minerva, and you should then be able to accept our offer of admission on-line. Graduate students at McGill require the approval of the Office of Graduate and Post-Doctoral Studies in order to declare the date on which they intend to graduate. If you are currently enrolled in a graduate program at McGill, we suggest that you accept our offer by mailing us the Acceptance of Offer of Admission form sent with the admission letter, along with the deposit.
In mid-July, an Orientation Package is emailed to all students who have accepted the offer. Read the Orientation package carefully, because it contains a lot of information. If you are an admitted student and you have not received your Orientation Package by late July, check that the email address under which you applied is still valid.
The registration process for the Law program is different from other programs offered by McGill. Newly admitted students have to confirm their registration though Minerva during the registration period. Following that, the Law Student Affairs Office will register all first year students to their first-year courses based on the language selection form.
In your Orientation Package, you will find instructions on how to use Minerva to register and a course language selection form.
Your package also contains instructions on how to get your ID card, a campus map, along with a calendar of key dates, the course calendar, the exam schedules, and some materials from the Law Students Association.
The Law Students Association organizes various orientation activities (see Law Studies: Orientation) for new students over the course of the first two weeks of the Fall term. This is the Faculty of Law's own version of Frosh. It's a great way to meet fellow law students. Your Orientation Package will contain a calendar of activities.
Admitted students who have accepted our offer are registered on the Law Orientation listserv some time in July. This email discussion list allows new students to ask questions that will be answered by the Admissions services and by representatives from the Law Students Association. It's also a fantastic way for new students to get to know each other before classes begin, to exchange leads to find an apartment and even dispel anxieties. In some years, new students had already organized informal get-togethers in Montreal and Toronto by early August! This listserv is shut down after Orientation.
Meet other new students who will be coming to McGill this fall and learn about campus life at a Summer Send-Off (organised by Alumni Online Community in various cities around the world.)
At the end of summer each year, we post the orientation activities calendar and other key information on this page.
McGill's First-Year Office assists new students and their families in obtaining information on resources and services available across campus.
Students arriving in Montreal for the first time who may not be familiar with the North American lifestyle in general, and Montreal in particular, may wish to take advantage of this program. A 'Buddy' is a primary contact person who provides information and guidance to someone who is unfamiliar with their new surroundings. New international students are matched with a student volunteer.
