BlackBerry Enterprise Server Password Security

Published: 30 Nov 2009

As part of the CIO's plan to address information security concerns, McGill IT Services will soon be implementing new minimum security settings on the BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES).  These settings will be put into effect beginning on December 7, 2009 for all BES users.

One of the main changes will require all BES users to have a device password to unlock the device each time they use it and after certain timeout intervals.   Those BES users who do not already use a password to unlock their devices will be automatically prompted to enter a password when they turn on their BlackBerry devices.  Those BES users who already use passwords on their devices will not be affected by this change.

For BES users who wish to implement an enhanced level of security, we have provided a set of more stringent security settings that you can apply yourselves; alternatively, you can request that the enhanced security settings be implemented for you on the BES.

Please see the article named Security requirements for McGill's BlackBerry Enterprise Server, in the IT Knowledge Base for details on the security requirements and additional instructions for securing your device.

Note that similar security requirements will be implemented in the future for users of non-BlackBerry devices, who use ActiveSync to access their McGill Email.
