McGill University names new Trenholme Director of Libraries
Janine Schmidt has been appointed as Trenholme Director of Libraries. Her term in office will begin on February 1, 2005.
After an extensive international search, Deputy Provost and Chief Information Officer Anthony C. Masi is pleased to announce that McGill University has appointed Mrs. Janine Schmidt as Trenholme Director of Libraries. Her term in office will begin on February 1, 2005. The Executive Committee of the Board of Governors of the University approved Mrs. Schmidt's nomination on September 7 and it was reported to McGill's Senate on September 22.
Janine Schmidt is an Arts graduate of the University of Queensland and holds a Master's degree in Librarianship from the University of New South Wales. She has also completed a variety of management training programs. She comes to McGill after serving for a decade as the University Librarian at the University of Queensland, where she won several awards, including Australian Library Manager of the Year (1999).
During her career Janine Schmidt has worked for major university libraries as well as public and research institutions. Under her leadership, the University of Queensland library system successfully integrated information technology systems, developed the University of Queensland Cybrary, refurbished existing buildings, installed over 1,100 computers in learning centres, collaborated in the development of multimedia teaching initiatives, and provided services to over 30,000 students and 5,000 staff.
Janine Schmidt has published widely in a variety of professional and academic journals, with particular attention paid to the evolution of the role of libraries in the 21st century. She is a frequent speaker at Australian and international conferences, has served on national committees in her native Australia, and has consulted widely around the world on library developments.
