Java upgrade on McGill computers - log off, but keep power on

Published: 4 Jun 2013

In order to improve IT security throughout McGill systems, IT Services has installed the Java Plugin version 6 update 45 on all centrally-managed Windows (PCs) computers.

Faculty and staff members: If you have not already done so, please be sure to log off, but keep your computer powered ON for at least 10 minutes so that the Java update can be installed through the automated update process. If you’re not sure how to log off, see these instructions.

Once you log in again, to find out if Java 1.6 update 45 was installed, follow the steps in this IT Knowledge Base article: Check the versions of Java installed on your PC

If you use a PC that is not managed by central IT Services: Your Local Area Network (LAN) administrator has been informed of this upgrade and should be planning to upgrade your computer soon.  If you have any questions about the upgrade of your PC, please contact your LAN administrator.

For Mac users: The Java upgrade does NOT apply to Mac computers. For Java versions 6 and below, Apple supplies their own version of Java. For Mac OS X 10.6 and below, use the Software Update feature (available on the Apple menu) to check that you have the most up-to-date version of Java 6 for your Mac.

Notes about version 6, update 45:

Although there is a version 7 of the Java Runtime Environment, our major IT systems are only compatible with version 6. Version 6 update 45 was released in April 2013. If you have any questions about the Java upgrade, please feel free to contact the ICS Service Desk.
