Outdoor WiFi now available on downtown campus

McGill IT Services has extended the Wireless Network service to outdoor areas on the downtown campus. As of today you should be able to receive a signal near the Roddick Gates and around the intersection in front of the Three Bares statue.  Additional access points will be added in the Spring at Redpath terrace and James Sculpture Garden/James Square.

Evault archives moving to in-place archive mail folder in Outlook

McGill IT Services is preparing to decommission the EVault email archiving service, used by active and retired faculty and staff, by March 31, 2016. Between December 20 and the end of March, archived mail messages will be moved from EVault to an “in-place” archive folder structure, which is accessible from Outlook 2010/2013/2016 on Windows and Outlook 2016....

Mac users: Trend Antivirus license extended till December 31, 2016

If you have Trend Antivirus for Mac, you may have noticed a message saying the "Trial Expires" December 31, 2015.The license has now been extended for another year, till December 31, 2016. Just click on the words “Trial Expires” and the new expiry date will take effect (you need to be connected to the Internet).

Update for SofTest exam software now supports Mac OS X El Capitan and Windows 10

Attention Law Students: ExamSoft, the company that makes Softest online exam software, has released an update, which now supports Mac OS X 10.11- "El Capitan" and Windows 10. The update is automatically downloaded on computers that already have Softest installed.

WiFi expands outdoors

Starting this January, McGill IT Services will begin providing WiFi to outdoor areas on campus. Initially, two areas will be covered: the Roddick Gates and the crossroads between the main entry road and the road in front of the 3 Bares statue. Another two areas will be covered in the spring:  Redpath terrace and the James Sculpture Garden / James Square.

Phishing scam: "Compromised Account"

A phishing email has been reported with the subject "Compromised Account". It is signed from McGill's Information Security (InfoSec) team, and urges the recipient to fill out a form to unlock their account. A sample of the email is shown below.

Phishing scam with subject: "Compromissed account"

A phishing email has been reported with the subject "Compromissed account". It is signed from McGill's IT Service Desk, and urges the recipient to click a CHANGED PASSWORD link. A sample of the email is shown below.

A phishing email has been reported with the subject "Dear McGill account users". It is from McGill University Webmail and asks the user to click on a fraudulent link to increase their mcgill.ca e-mail quota. A sample of the email is shown below.

Resolved: uPrint Anywhere (via email) issues

Update - 4:30 pm, Nov. 12, 2015: uPrint Anywhere is once again successfully printing email attachments. You should now be able to print documents from your mobile device or laptop by attaching the files to an email and sending to uprint [dot] mono [at] mcgill [dot] ca or uprint [dot] colour [at] mcgill [dot] ca.  The message body will not be sent to the printer.

uPrint Anywhere changes: prints attached files, but not email body

uPrint Anywhere is the service that allows you to print documents from mobile devices and laptops, by attaching them to an email and sending to either uprint [dot] mono [at] mcgill [dot] ca or uprint [dot] colour [at] mcgill [dot] ca.

Up to now, both the email body and any attachments would be sent to the uPrint system. However, due to issues with the way email is handled in Office 365, uPrint Anywhere will no longer print the body of an email message; only attached files will be sent to the uPrint system.

Update: uPrint Anywhere issues

Update - Nov. 10, 2015: To address the issue reported below, the uPrint service has been reconfigured so that the body of the email message is not sent to the uPrint system, and only attached files can be printed. See this announcement.
