MATLAB coming April 1st for all McGill students

As of April 1st, the latest version of MATLAB® will be available for students to download for free.

MATLAB is a high-level language and interactive environment that enables you to perform computationally intensive tasks faster than with traditional programming languages.

McGill’s phishing expedition

Educating computer users on the consequences of phishing is a challenge, especially since cybercriminals develop more sophisticated-looking emails and schemes every day. We’re all incredibly busy and bombarded with emails; even the most tech-savvy among us have fallen into their trap.Last week, IT Services phished all faculty and staff members of the McGill community. Yesterday, March 11, they did it again. Some people ask why is this necessary?

Web VPN service no longer available to access Library e-resources as of March 16, 2015

As of March 16, 2015, the Web VPN service will only be available to access archived online courses in WebCT (Fall 2010 to Winter 2012).

Current students, faculty and staff can access Library e-resources via wireless network when on campus, and directly from the web browser via EZProxy or via McGill's VPN when off-campus.

McGill Password Security Questions (PSS) was decommissioned on February 23

As part of an ongoing effort to streamline services, the McGill Password Security Questions (PSS) tool was decommissioned on Monday, February 23. While this tool was initially launched with the goal of providing additional security questions and password reset functionality to our end-users, it essentially duplicated options that were already available in Minerva and caused user confusion.

It's time for a phishing expedition

Periodically, IT Services will send out mock phishing emails to the McGill community as part of a proactive approach to increase awareness of the dangers of phishing. Users who click on a link in one of these emails will be redirected to a page informing them that they have participated in a phishing awareness exercise, and will be encouraged to learn how to identify and avoid falling victim to these types of scams.

Resolution: Windows update causes problems with Cisco AnyConnect VPN client

The Cisco AnyConnect client software, which is used to connect to McGill's VPN, does not work after the Windows update for IE11 is installed. The error message displayed is:"Failed to initialize connection subsystem".

To resolve this issue, run Windows Update. Windows Update is included in your Control Panel. To check for updates:

MS Office 365 ProPlus now available for faculty & staff

McGill faculty and staff members now have FREE access to Office 365 ProPlus, which includes the latest versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and other Office apps.

The service allows you to install the Office suite on up to 5 personal devices*, including PCs, Macs, and 5 iPad and Windows tablets. You can also use the Office Mobile apps on iPhone, Android  and Windows smartphones.

Resolved: Issues activating Office 365 ProPlus applications on iOS mobile devices

Resolved - January 15, 2015:Microsoft has released an update for Office Mobile Apps, now available on the App Store, which resolves the activation issue reported below.  Please upgrade to this new version (v1.5) now.

Pension System users: if you use Firefox, you may see a warning message

Firefox users attempting to log into McGill’s pension site ( might see a warning message stating "This Connection is Untrusted". The warning is displayed because the Mozilla organization hasn’t yet approved the security certificate used by the site.
