IT Security Alert: Phishing Scam about reaching your mailbox storage

A phishing attempt about reaching your mailbox storage is circulating. A sample of the email is shown below.

Please delete this email immediately! It does NOT come from a McGill source.

It is a fraudulent attempt to gain access to your personal information. McGill never solicits any such information by email. If you have already clicked on the link in this, email and submitted your personal information, you need to change your McGill Password as soon as possible.

Implications of Canada’s new Anti-Spam Law

To conform with Canada’s new Anti-Spam Legislation (CASL), coming into effect July 1, 2014, McGill IT Services is increasing efforts to reduce the risk of spam on our mailing lists. We have tightened the regulations on the two types of email distribution lists currently supported.

1) LISTSERV mailing lists are those with addresses of the form xxx [at] lists [dot] mcgill [dot] ca.

Emails requesting continued subscription to mailing lists – due to Canadian Anti-Spam Law

You may recently have received one or more emails requesting that you click a link to "Continue receiving promotions" from an organization or commercial company. As of July 1, 2014 the Canadian government will pass new anti-spam legislation (CASL), which imposes severe penalties for organizations that do not abide by the laws concerning mailing lists.

New software available from the McGill software site

The ChemBioDraw Ultra 14 Suite is now available from the McGill software site.

Go to the McGill software licensing site to place an order, and get the instructions on how to download the software from the vendor site (Cambridgesoft).

Resolved: Content Management System (Documentum) - issue with search index

Update:  The issue regarding searching in the Content Management System was resolved on June 18, 2014


There is currently a problem with the Content Management System (Documentum) search index (in CenterStage and Webtop interfaces). Content uploaded or updated since May 31st may not appear accurately in search results.

McGill staff: reset the McGill Password of resource account(s) you manage

In May, we requested that you change your McGill Password. Now, as a resource account(s) sponsor, we ask that you take action to ensure their password is also changed.

Changes to McGill's Anti-spam System (https://junkmail.mcgill.ca)

As of Monday, June 2, 2014, changes will be made to McGill's Anti-spam system in order to better protect the McGill community from phishing attempts and other email fraud.  The new settings may cause some messages to be falsely identified as spam and quarantined (blocked from your Inbox). 

How to know if messages sent to your Inbox have been quarantined

If you have not "opted out"  of the Anti-spam quarantine system or "unsubscribed" from the daily digest, you should receive daily notifications from

Telephone scam claiming to be from WestJet or Air Canada

Please be advised of a telephone scam claiming to be from WestJet or Air Canada telling you that you won "points/miles" or you are a "perferred customer". The call might look like it is coming from a McGill phone number. This is a scam and you have not won anything. This is an attempt to steal your personal information. Simply hang up the phone if you receive one of these calls.

A phishing attempt is circulating, with the Subject line: "Mcgill.ca UPDTATE". The message text states "shutting down some accounts due to congestion", and asks you to click on a link to "UPDATE".

It is a fraudulent attempt to gain access to your personal information. McGill never solicits any such information by email.

Alumni: reset your McGill Password

Back in April, you may have heard of the Heartbleed vulnerability and its potential impact on McGill. All of McGill’s central IT systems have been evaluated, and updates were applied where needed. Since it is always a good practice to periodically change passwords, we encourage you to reset your McGill Password at this time.

In April, we emailed you about the Heartbleed vulnerability and its potential impact on McGill. All of McGill’s central IT systems have been evaluated, and updates were applied where needed. As a final precaution, we strongly encourage you to change your McGill Password without delay

A phishing attempt is circulating, with the Subject line: "ITS help desk". The message text states "Your mailbox is almost full", and asks you to click on a link to increase your mailbox quota.

Resolved: Several IT services unavailable

The situation has been resolved and all IT systems are back up and running.

Several IT services are currently unavailable, including Minerva/Banner,myMcGill, uPrint, VPN, Knowledge Base, Lync Phones and others. We are investigating the issue and will post updates on the IT Services website (www.mcgill.ca/it) as soon as we have additional details.

e-Elections System Currently Unavailable

The e-Elections system (Omnivox), is currently unavailable. This system is used by faculty and staff to vote in University elections. We are investigating and hope to resolve the problem as quickly as possible.  We apologize for this inconvenience and thank you for your patience.
