myCourses upgrade has new look, consistency across devices

On Monday, May 29, at 7:00 am, myCourses will be upgraded to provide a more consistent user experience across computers, tablets, and mobile devices. There will be no downtime associated with this upgrade.

The changes are primarily cosmetic and will not impact functionality. The most noticeable changes include:

Resource account sponsors: McGill Password change and validation required

 A reset of resource account passwords is required before May 24th, 2017.  For resource accounts that had their passwords changed on or after March 8th 2017, when the password reset was initiated, a reset is not required.

Upcoming email changes to take advantage of Office 365 - June through Fall

Starting in June and continuing into the fall, McGill IT Services will be making the following changes to optimize our email processes and gain the full benefits of moving to Email on Office 365:

1) New management of redirects

Starting mid-June, all users will have a new way to self-manage redirects from their @mail.mcgill.ca and @mcgill.ca email addresses to other email services (e.g., Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail, or McGill departmental servers).

McGill Password change required again for targeted users

Targeted users may receive an email from IT Announcements, advising them to change their McGill Password again by May 24th, 2017. This requirement applies to individuals whose current password is identical to the one they had before the mandatory password change in March 2017.

Global Ransomware Attack - WannaCry

An unprecedented cyber-attack, named WannaCry, began targeting Microsoft Windows users worldwide on Friday, May 12th, 2017. WannaCry is a type of malware called “ransomware”, which works by encrypting all files on a user’s computer and network drives, and holds information hostage in an attempt to extort money for its release.

Termination of old 'staff.mcgill.ca' and ‘elf.mcgill.ca’ email addresses

Over the summer McGill IT Services will be clearing out old email accounts, which have not been moved to Office 365. Email addresses ending in “@staff.mcgill.ca” and “@elf.mcgill.ca” will be terminated effective September 15, 2017. These email addresses are currently redirecting mail to other email addresses, such as @mcgill.ca, Gmail, Hotmail, Yahoo, etc....

RESOLVED: Intermittent Minerva login issues

Update May 2, 2017 at 10:13 am: The issue reported yesterday has been resolved. Users should now be able to login to Minerva with their username and password.

 

Original announcement - May 1, 2017: Users may experience errors when logging into Minerva with their username and password. An error screen may appear suggesting you are not authorized to access the system.

myCourses Upgrade on May 29: New, Consistent Look and Feel

On May 29, myCourses, McGill’s learning management system, will be upgraded to be responsive for a consistent user experience across computers, tablets, and mobile devices.

Below are screenshots of the new look and feel from a computer and mobile device for both the instructor and student views.

The changes are primarily cosmetic and will not impact functionality. This includes: 

A new, simplified experience that will be more consistent across all types of devices;

uPrint prepaid cards needed for Exchange, IUT, and some Continuing Studies students

As of May 3, 2017, students who are members of the following groups will not be able to access the uPrint machines on campus with their McGill ID Card, or their McGill username and password:

 - Exchange students  - Inter-University Transfer students  - Special and Visiting students in the School of Continuing Studies  - Special intensive English and French programs in the School of Continuing Studies
