IT Security Alert: VoiceMail Phishing Scam - Several attempts are circulating with an attached .zip file

Several phishing attempts are circulating from different senders with different file attachment names. A sample email has the subject line: "You have received a new VoiceMail". Find a sample of this email below.

Please delete any suspcious email immediately! They do NOT come from a McGill source.

It is a fraudulent attempt to gain access to your personal information. McGill never solicits any such information by email.

McGill has a new, more secure VPN

McGill IT Services has introduced a new Virtual Private Network (VPN) to allow McGill faculty, staff and students access to internal McGill systems and resources from outside the McGill network.  This VPN, securevpn.mcgill.ca, uses the more secure SSL protocol and replaces inside.mcgill.ca, which uses the "Point-to-Point Tunneling" protocol.

Want a longer McGill Password? No problem!

As of 5pm on Wednesday, July 16, IT Services implemented an increase in the length of the McGill Password.

Instead of being restricted to EXACTLY 8 characters in length, you can now create a password that is 8 to 18 characters in length.

WebCT access ending for Summer 2010 and earlier

Since the new myCourses learning management system was introduced in Summer 2012, the legacy LMS (WebCT) is being phased out. Note that Friday, September 26, 2014 will be the last date to request access to courses from Summer 2010 and earlier.

Students and instructors can continue to request access to WebCT for courses offered from Fall 2010 to Winter 2012 for another two years. The WebCT system will be fully shut down on September 30, 2016.

Implications of Canada’s new Anti-Spam Law

To conform with Canada’s new Anti-Spam Legislation (CASL), coming into effect July 1, 2014, McGill IT Services is increasing efforts to reduce the risk of spam on our mailing lists. We have tightened the regulations on the two types of email distribution lists currently supported.

1) LISTSERV mailing lists are those with addresses of the form xxx [at] lists [dot] mcgill [dot] ca.

Emails requesting continued subscription to mailing lists – due to Canadian Anti-Spam Law

You may recently have received one or more emails requesting that you click a link to "Continue receiving promotions" from an organization or commercial company. As of July 1, 2014 the Canadian government will pass new anti-spam legislation (CASL), which imposes severe penalties for organizations that do not abide by the laws concerning mailing lists.

New software available from the McGill software site

The ChemBioDraw Ultra 14 Suite is now available from the McGill software site.

Go to the McGill software licensing site to place an order, and get the instructions on how to download the software from the vendor site (Cambridgesoft).

Resolved: Content Management System (Documentum) - issue with search index

Update:  The issue regarding searching in the Content Management System was resolved on June 18, 2014


There is currently a problem with the Content Management System (Documentum) search index (in CenterStage and Webtop interfaces). Content uploaded or updated since May 31st may not appear accurately in search results.

We apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience while we resolve this issue.

McGill staff: reset the McGill Password of resource account(s) you manage

In May, we requested that you change your McGill Password. Now, as a resource account(s) sponsor, we ask that you take action to ensure their password is also changed.

Changes to McGill's Anti-spam System (https://junkmail.mcgill.ca)

As of Monday, June 2, 2014, changes will be made to McGill's Anti-spam system in order to better protect the McGill community from phishing attempts and other email fraud.  The new settings may cause some messages to be falsely identified as spam and quarantined (blocked from your Inbox). 

How to know if messages sent to your Inbox have been quarantined

If you have not "opted out"  of the Anti-spam quarantine system or "unsubscribed" from the daily digest, you should receive daily notifications from

Telephone scam claiming to be from WestJet or Air Canada

Please be advised of a telephone scam claiming to be from WestJet or Air Canada telling you that you won "points/miles" or you are a "perferred customer". The call might look like it is coming from a McGill phone number. This is a scam and you have not won anything. This is an attempt to steal your personal information. Simply hang up the phone if you receive one of these calls.
