McGill IT Services has introduced a new Virtual Private Network (VPN) to allow McGill faculty, staff and students access to internal McGill systems and resources from outside the McGill network. This VPN, securevpn.mcgill.ca, uses the more secure SSL protocol and replaces inside.mcgill.ca, which uses the "Point-to-Point Tunneling" protocol.
To use the VPN you will need to install the Cisco AnyConnect app (available for Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS and Android). For instructions on setting up a VPN connection, see Virtual Private Network (VPN) in the IT Knowledge Base.
VPN is NOT required for Library resources
Note that McGill students, faculty and staff members DO NOT need a VPN connection to access Library resources when off campus. Simply click on any Library resource and you will be prompted to sign in using your McGill Username and Password via EZProxy. You will automatically be given access to the materials you are allowed to view, depending on your status.
VPN needed for remote connections to resources residing on McGill's wireless network
Note that we will soon be implementing additional security measures on the campus Wireless network, which will require a VPN connection when accessing resources on the wireless network from outside of McGill. If you find that you are unable to connect to a McGill service or computer from outside of McGill, contact the IT Service Desk to find out if a VPN connection is needed.
