Warning: CryptoLocker Virus is back again - don't open attachments

There is currently a virus infecting computers via email attachments.  In the latest fraud reported at McGill, the subject of the email is You have received a voice mail, and the attachment contains the virus.

If you receive any emails containing .ZIP file attachments, DO NOT open them.

Phishing Scam from "RBC Express", Subject: User Roles Waiting for Approval

A phishing attempt is circulating purporting to come from RBC Express (Royal Bank of Canada), with the Subject: "User Roles Waiting For Approval". It seems to be targeted to McGill staff and asks recipients to sign in using their RBC login credentials.

Bash security vulnerability

Yesterday, a new security vulnerability, affecting Bash, was announced. The Bash shell, commonly accessed through Command Prompt or the Terminal application, is a part of many Linux, Unix, and Mac systems. Since it has been around for more than two decades, older devices are also vulnerable. If used maliciously, Bash allows an attacker to take over an operating system, access confidential information, make changes, etc.. 

McGill’s IT Services is devoting their full attention to addressing any potential threat this may cause to centrally-managed IT systems.

Knowledge Base Service update Saturday, Sept 27

Please note that the Knowlege Base Service at McGill will be undergoing a minor software update on Saturday, September 27, from 7:00 am to 9:00 am.  During this period the  IT Knowledge Base (http://kb.mcgill.ca/it), Financial Services Knowledge Base (http://kb.mcgill.ca/fskb), and Library Knowledge Base (for administrative users) will be unavailable.

McGill Web System down for maintenance

IT Services will perform maintenance on the file storage system that is used in conjunction with those websites running on the Drupal version 7 platform. As a result, these websites will be offline on Wednesday, September 24, between 5:30 and 7:00 am.

During this 90-minute period, anyone attempting to access a Drupal 7 site will see a notice saying that the site is temporarily offline and offering direct links to other essential services at McGill.

Site managers and editors will not be able to edit or make changes to the affected sites.

IT Security Alert: Phishing Scam - "Library Account Access"

A phishing attempt is circulating with the subject line: "Library Account Access". It contains a link that appears to go to the McGill WebVPN, but it goes to a completely different URL. A sample of the email is shown below.

Banner INB maintenance tonight, 10pm - 11pm

Earlier today, some Banner users reported that toolbars and buttons were missing from Banner INB forms. To address the problem, IT Services will be bringing Banner down for approximately 1 hour, tonight, September 11, from 10pm to 11pm.

Minerva and other systems will not be affected.

Faculty and Staff: McGill will double your password if you don’t do it first

If you haven’t yet changed your McGill Password, it’s time to get to it.

In October, all faculty and staff members who did not change their password when prompted to earlier this year will have their McGill Password doubled.
