Hoax email warns of cellphone telemarketing: An email circulating on the Net warns that massive telemarketing to cellphones is about to begin, so cellphone users should register with the Do Not Call registry. This message is a hoax: please don't pass it on! There is no Do Not Call registry in Canada: a bill to create one was passed by Parliament in December, but it has not yet been proclaimed.
Because of multiple virus infected and/or compromised machines connecting on McGill's VPN, and sending viruses and spam through the anti-spam gateway, access to port 25 has been blocked from the following subnet to the mx.mcgill.ca gateway: 184.108.40.206/24. All machines on the McGill network should be sending mail through mailhost.mcgill.ca as their smtp server.
Beginning on February 20, 2008, McGill staff email addresses ending in @mcgill.ca will be automatically filtered for spam using the McGill Anti-Spam Quarantine system, and subscribed to receive the daily quarantine digest. See "Details" for more information.

On Thursday, at around 11:30 am, we encountered a problem with some of our network switches, which are connected to several central servers. When the switches were rebooted, connectivity to the servers was lost, and this may have prevented some users from accessing their emails and network files. The servers and their associated services were restored to normal by 12:15 pm. We apologize for any inconvenience you may have experienced.
