McGill’s phishing expedition

Educating computer users on the consequences of phishing is a challenge, especially since cybercriminals develop more sophisticated-looking emails and schemes every day. We’re all incredibly busy and bombarded with emails; even the most tech-savvy among us have fallen into their trap.Last week, IT Services phished all faculty and staff members of the McGill community. Yesterday, March 11, they did it again. Some people ask why is this necessary?

Web VPN service no longer available to access Library e-resources as of March 16, 2015

As of March 16, 2015, the Web VPN service will only be available to access archived online courses in WebCT (Fall 2010 to Winter 2012).

Current students, faculty and staff can access Library e-resources via wireless network when on campus, and directly from the web browser via EZProxy or via McGill's VPN when off-campus.

McGill Password Security Questions (PSS) was decommissioned on February 23

As part of an ongoing effort to streamline services, the McGill Password Security Questions (PSS) tool was decommissioned on Monday, February 23. While this tool was initially launched with the goal of providing additional security questions and password reset functionality to our end-users, it essentially duplicated options that were already available in Minerva and caused user confusion.

Disruption of wired & wireless network in BMH Friday, March 6


The replacement of a defective UPS will affect wired and wireless connectivity in Bishop Mountain Hall as well as the REZ network in BMH on Friday March 6 at 7:30am for around 10 minutes.

It's time for a phishing expedition

Periodically, IT Services will send out mock phishing emails to the McGill community as part of a proactive approach to increase awareness of the dangers of phishing. Users who click on a link in one of these emails will be redirected to a page informing them that they have participated in a phishing awareness exercise, and will be encouraged to learn how to identify and avoid falling victim to these types of scams.

Resolution: Windows update causes problems with Cisco AnyConnect VPN client

The Cisco AnyConnect client software, which is used to connect to McGill's VPN, does not work after the Windows update for IE11 is installed. The error message displayed is:
"Failed to initialize connection subsystem".

To resolve this issue, run Windows Update. Windows Update is included in your Control Panel. To check for updates:

Event Capture and Broadcast / AV Streaming service (BCOOL TV) maintenance - Feb 12


The Event Capture and Broadcast / AV Streaming service (BCOOL TV) will undergo a scheduled maintenance operation on Thursday, February 12, between 10:30 am and 12:30 pm. The system will be unavailable during this period.

myMcGill portal downtime - Monday, February 9, 9:00 to 10:00 pm


The myMcGill portal will be unavailable for approximately 1 hour this evening, Monday, February 9 starting at 9:00 pm in order to reboot the system.

Mathematica software now Free for Students


Mathematica, from Wolfram Research, is a powerful computational software used for mathematical modeling and data visualization.  McGill IT Services has been providing Mathematica to Faculty & Staff, and in computer labs across the University for the past few years.  Now it is also available to students via the McGill Software site (www.mcgill.ca/software).
