A phishing attempt is circulating with the subject line: "IT Maintenance Schedule". A sample of the email is shown below.

Please delete this email immediately! It does NOT come from a McGill source.

It is a fraudulent attempt to gain access to your personal information. McGill never solicits any such information by email. If you have already clicked on the link in this, email and submitted your personal information, you need to change your McGill Password as soon as possible.

myMcGill portal downtime this weekend - July 12 to 13

Please note that the myMcGill portal will be unavailable from Saturday, July 12 at 10 pm to Sunday July 13 at 12 pm noon, for maintenance work.  This period coincides with the Minerva/Banner regularly scheduled monthly downtime.

During this period you will still be able to access major IT services, such as email and myCourses, using the links on When myMcGill is unavailable page.

McGill Password reset tool on Minerva unavailable on Wednesday, July 16

On Wednesday, July 16, between 4-5pm, IT Services will implement an increase in the length of the McGill Password. Instead of being EXACTLY 8 characters in length, you will be able to create a password that is 8 to 18 characters in length.

New uPrint prepaid card for faculty/department use

uPrint Prepaid Guest Card

IT Services has introduced a new "uPrint Prepaid Guest Card" to be used by faculties or departments who wish to provide their casual staff or visitors with a prepaid card for the uPrint service. They are available in fixed amounts of $30 and $50 (tax included).

MOOCs and GROOCs on the move

McGill’s initial experiment with Massive Open Online Courses, or MOOCs, has been a success and the first offering, Food for Thought, will be repeated next year. More than 32,000 people from 160 countries, with an average age of 35 (a bit younger than normal) signed up for the MOOC. Almost 1,800 people completed all elements of the course, and another 7,000 people completed at least one assignment or test.

Canada Says No to Spam

To conform with Canada’s new Anti-Spam Legislation (CASL), coming into effect July 1, 2014, McGill IT Services is increasing efforts to reduce the risk of spam on our mailing lists. We have tightened the regulations on the two types of email distribution lists currently supported.

1) LISTSERV mailing lists are those with addresses of the form xxx [at] lists [dot] mcgill [dot] ca.

Emails requesting continued subscription to mailing lists – due to Canadian Anti-Spam Law

You may recently have received one or more emails requesting that you click a link to "Continue receiving promotions" from an organization or commercial company. As of July 1, 2014 the Canadian government will pass new anti-spam legislation (CASL), which imposes severe penalties for organizations that do not abide by the laws concerning mailing lists.
