On Wednesday, December 12, 2007, the Web Service Group will move to 688 Sherbrooke to join its parent unit, Content and Collaboration Solutions.
The Call Centre experienced a problem this morning around 9:50 and is now functioning normally.
The phone problem that occurred last Friday due to a water-damaged cable is still not resolved. We hope by the end of the day service will be back to normal. Buildings affected include: McLennan Library, Redpath Library, Redpath Museum, Leacock Building, Peterson Hall, Student Services Building, 3434 McTavish, Faculty Club, McGill Bookstore and Bronfman Building. Elevator phones have been automatically dialing the security office. Sporadic users in other buildings may also be affected.
Please be advised that NCS will begin implementation on June 6 of the recently adopted policies regarding the reduction of spam originating from McGill's network. Access control lists will be implemented at the network perimeter to prevent SMTP traffic from the DAS, wireless, VPN and residence VLANS reaching the Internet directly. Machines on these networks should have mail client programs configured to relay via mailhost.mcgill.ca. It may however change the nature of the error message received from 'relaying denied' to 'connection timed out.' Those most likely to be affected are mobile PC and VPN users who switch between our network and a high-speed provider. Most of those users are already familiar with the situation in that Videotron and Sympatico have blocked outgoing port 25 for the last few years. For email client configuration information for supported client programs click on 'More information.'
Due to technical difficulties, instructors are not able to export their grades from WebCT to Minerva at this time. This notice will be removed once the issue has been resolved.
Network and Communications Services is pleased to announce a new long distance rate plan for McGill employees.
Banner/Minerva will be unavailable for a brief period this evening, July 24, at approximately 10:30 pm, for system maintenance.
Some McGill buildings are still affected by the telephone problem that was first reported on September 18, 2006. Voice mail users experiencing problems can access their mailboxes from other working telephones by dialing local 8227. NCS continues to make repairs and apologizes for the inconvenience caused.
All McGill instructors are invited to the Fair to share their teaching experiences with different technologies and demonstrate how they use them for teaching and learning. Register early using the online registration form (click on "More information"); prizes for early registration will be awarded! If you want to showcase your work and/or demonstrate examples at the Fair, please email Adam Finkelstein by April 28. The Fair takes place at the Faculty Club on Thursday, May 4, from 1 to 4 pm.
A new online Student Directory is now available by clicking on the "Student directory" link at the top right of the McGill home page (and coming to a McGill web page near you within the next week or so). Inclusion in this directory is at the student's discretion (by default you are not included). If you are a student and you want to appear in this directory, you must log in to Minerva, go to the "Student Menu," click on "Student Directory" and choose the email address and/or a phone number to publish. You can also decide who can see your information: the world (everyone) or only the McGill community (those who first log in with McGill credentials). You can make it easier for your fellow students and colleagues to contact you by opting in to the Student Directory. Encourage others to opt in as well. The more students participate, the more effective the directory will be.
