Inter- vs. Intra-Faculty Transfers

Inter-Faculty Transfer

The Faculty of Education welcomes transfer applications from students in other McGill faculties who are currently enrolled in a degree program.

If you are registered in the School of Continuing Studies, you are not eligible for an inter-faculty transfer and must apply directly to the University Admissions Office.

Intra-Faculty Transfer

Students currently registered in a degree program in the Faculty of Education (who will not be graduating in the current academic year) may apply to transfer to a different program within the Faculty.

Transfer Requirements

Inter-Faculty Transfer Applicants

  • Minimum CGPA of 3.00 (including the most recent Winter term)*
  • Personal statement (a rubric is available here)

*If you do not meet the minimum CGPA requirement, please provide an explanation of any circumstances which may have contributed to your academic standing in the “Comments” section of the Minerva application. Your explanation should also outline any steps that you have taken in order to improve your academic performance (e.g. a study plan, counselling, etc.).

Intra-Faculty Transfer Applicants

  • Satisfactory standing
  • Minimum CGPA of 2.00 (including the most recent Winter term)
  • Personal statement (a rubric is available here)

*Intra-Faculty transfer applicants who do not have a 3.00 CGPA may be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Decisions and Application Status

Please note, meeting the minimum transfer requirements does not guarantee admission. Space is subject to availability and may vary from year to year. Students should follow the program overview for their current program until a decision about their transfer application is finalized. Students should NOT register for courses in anticipation of a transfer.

It is each applicant’s responsibility to check their McGill e-mail at regular intervals and take any necessary action. If you have made plans to be away for the summer, please do not neglect to check your McGill e-mail as there may be time sensitive requests. In some cases, you may be asked to provide additional documentation or information. If this happens, an e-mail will be sent to your McGill e-mail address, informing you that the status of your application has been changed to “File Incomplete” or “Under Review.” If you receive this message, you should immediately consult your application on Minerva to check the new requirements and submit the requested information. Incomplete applications cannot be processed and will eventually be canceled.

Decisions are reached by the Internships & Student Affairs Office and are made from mid July until late August, once program transfer capacities are determined. Students will be notified at their McGill e-mail address when their application status changes. We are not able to send out decisions any earlier. The ability for current students to transfer programs within McGill is an option and resource available to current students, but it is not a guarantee, and therefore students are reminded and encouraged to register for their current program and plan accordingly.

Transfer requests are evaluated on the basis of academic standing, the completion of any necessary pre-requisites and the submission of a personal statement. Students with fewer than 30 McGill credits on their record and/or a CGPA under 3.0 may be asked to attend an interview with the Internships & Student Affairs Director.

Please note, during this time, ISA will not issue permit overrides to allow you into “Program Restricted” courses. You must wait for your transfer to be finalized.

Once finalized, you will receive a cumulative record delivered to your McGill e-mail address. This document will outline which courses have been accepted for transfer/equivalency and which courses you will need to take to complete your program. Transfer credits will only be granted for appropriate courses passed with a grade of ‘C’ or better.

You will be assigned a new Academic Advisor. You can view the name of your advisor at the top of your unofficial transcript in Minerva. Prior to contacting your advisor for a meeting or information, please review the advising materials provided on your Department’s website (Department of Integrated Studies in Education here; Physical Education and Kinesiology here).

Students who are admitted to the Faculty are subject to the program and degree requirements in effect at the time of transfer.

Students admitted to any of the B.Ed. teacher education programs will be required to write and pass the English Exam for Teacher Certification (EETC) during the first term of their transfer to the Faculty of Education. Please visit the EETC webpage for more information.

**If you are an International Student and you are accepted into a B.Ed. or the B.A.(Education) program, please be advised that you will be required to apply for a government-issued internship/co-op work permit, which will allow you to go on your mandatory field experiences. Please review the information on our website, related to the process of applying for your permit or please visit International Student Services office during their drop-in hours.**
