Shakespeare, Language, Moral Philosophy: Beckwith, Cavell and Others
The purpose of this reading group is to explore the question of forgiveness as a moral concept in the writings of Shakespeare by reading Beckwith’s commentary Shakespeare and the Grammar of Forgiveness. The members of this group aim not only to rehearse Shakespeare’s account of forgiveness, but to heighten their awareness of the contextual circumstances (religious, moral, biographical) that shaped Shakespeare’s treatment of the concept and its performative manifestation through linguistic modalities in the plays. A series of short texts have been chosen to complement the book.
