Professor Patrick Hansen
Schulich School of Music
Collaboration is what moves me as an artist, what gets me up in the morning, what excites me to teach, and what connects me to a vast community of others – from set designers to students to audience members.
In my work, both as a professor of opera and a professional working as a stage director, conductor, vocal coach, and pianist, I focus on exploring sub-textual leitmotifs – musical, spatial, and/or textual – created by composers and librettists from all periods and genres. Breathing life into old (or new) productions for today’s live audiences is a complex dance, one that allows me to flex my Artisanal and Artistic muscles.
During the next two years I look forward to working on 1) expanding the definition of collaboration into spheres not normally associated or thought of as “operatic”; 2) redefining what “opera” is, through community engagement and educational outreach into greater Montreal; 3) investigating source materials’ influences (from Shakespeare’s texts to Hip-Hop poetry) on both traditional and non-traditional operatic repertoire; 4) exploring the creation of opera in everyday places – particularly public spaces.
