University is about so much more than what you learn in the classroom. By working and/or volunteering, you are:
- engaging in new experiences,
- gaining valuable life & career skills,
- creating professional networks,
- ensuring good references for future jobs,
- strengthening your résumé,
- discovering new interests,
- making new contacts,
- and even have some fun in the process!

Volunteering
Important! "Volunteering" generally refers to unpaid activities that support a charitable or non-profit organization, project, or campaign. If you’re “working” for a company but not being paid, or engaging in an activity that would qualify as "work experience" (e.g. tutoring) – it’s considered “work” and you will need a work permit before you start. See the detailed definitions of work & volunteering on the CIC website.
If you plan to volunteer in schools, hospitals, or senior residences, you need a CIC medical exam before you start; in some cases, you may also need a work permit. If in doubt, please contact us.
A wealth of volunteering opportunities in a variety of different areas (within McGill, in Montreal, and even internationally) are available on the following sites:
- International Student Services
- Career Placement Services (CaPS)
- Social Equity & Diversity Education (SEDE)
Don't hesitate - get involved!
