Student Work


Work” is defined in the CIC Regulations as an activity for which wages are paid or commission is earned, OR that competes directly with activities of Canadian citizens or permanent residents in the Canadian labour market.

NOTE: "work" includes "unpaid employment undertaken for the purpose of obtaining work experience, such as an internship or practicum normally done by a student." (see CIC website)

New $100 fee for open work permits

As of February 21st, a new $100 fee will be added to the existing $155 fee for Open Work Permit applications (e.g. the Post Graduation Work Permit and the Work Permit for Spouses).  Co-op/internship permits are still fee exempt.  See CIC notice under "New fee for open work permit applicants" for details.
