What is the International Student Leadership Program?
The International Student Leadership Program (ISLP) is an exciting new initiative designed to give you the chance to develop leadership skills, self-efficacy, and confidence while sharing your unique perspectives as an international student.
By actively contributing to the development of International Student Services projects, programs & communications initiatives; by attending inspiring leadership training workshops; and by engaging in peer mentoring and coaching, you will raise your McGill experience to a whole new level.
You will have the opportunity to help raise awareness of international student issues at McGill, promote greater understanding and cooperation amongst campus groups, and contribute to the ongoing internationalization of the campus community.

What kinds of programs, activities & events will I engage in?
Principal experiential learning opportunities for International Student Leaders (ISLs) include:
- Post-Arrival Orientation (“Meet & Greet” lounge, basic peer advising, referrals)
- International Week in February (planning, elaboration, promotion, delivery, assessment)
- Workshops (planning, elaboration, promotion, delivery, assessment)
- Events (planning, elaboration, promotion, delivery, assessment)
- Faculty & Residence Outreach Activities (on-site advising, referrals, event & workshop promotion)
Other experiential learning opportunities for ISLs include:
- Referring students to other units/departments when appropriate
- Managing ISS student-focused communications, publicity, and social media
- Acting as an international student guest speaker at events or on panels
- Providing a student perspective on ISS projects, programs & initiatives
- Acting as a representative of ISS in your faculty, department, or residence

Who can apply?
The ISL team will consist of 8-12 students from a range of different Faculties, programs, and levels (undergrad and grad). To apply, you must be:
- A current full-time international student (i.e. with a Study Permit) in an undergraduate or graduate degree program
- In good academic standing
- Motivated to learn, develop new skills, and engage with the campus community
- Interested in international student needs and issues
- Able to work independently, with minimal supervision
- Willing to take initiative and propose fresh ideas
- Have strong communications skills
- Experienced at planning and highly organized
- Conscious of the importance of student confidentiality
- Able to interact in a professional manner with respect, integrity, and diplomacy
- Willing to share knowledge and experience with peers
Please note: The program requires a commitment of 5-8 hours per week, from August 26th, 2013 – April 11th, 2014, and participation in a mandatory 2-day training/team-building session on August 21st & 22nd, 2013.
When Does the Program Start?
The program starts with a mandatory 2-day training/team-building session on August 21st & 22nd, 2013.
There will be monthly skill-building Leadership Training workshops, and semi-monthly ISLP meetings.
The program wraps up in mid-April, at the end of the academic year.
