Applying to study in Montreal

Non-Canadians must obtain permission to study from the governments of Quebec and Canada. Immigration Quebec issues the Certificate of Acceptance of Quebec (CAQ) and Citizenship and Immigration Canada issues federal Study Permits.

International students should begin the application process for both a provincial CAQ (first step) and a federal Study Permit (second step) as soon as possible after receiving their letter of admission from McGill.

Essentially, both federal and provincial immigration officials need to know three things:

  1. Do you have a valid status (ie. citizenship) in your own country?
  2. Do you meet the conditions of admission to the University?
  3. Do you have funds to cover your living and academic expenses?

Information on the application process is included in the Pre-Departure and Immigration Guide which will be available shortly for 2009-2010.

Please note:

  • Students who have been accepted to programs that will be completed in less than six months do not require a CAQ or Study Permit.
  • All international students seeking on-campus employment must have a CAQ and Study Permit, regardless of the length of their studies at McGill.
  • Students who will register without a CAQ and a Study Permit must submit a copy of their passport to Enrolment Services.
