The mandate of the SC-IST (formerly the Senate Committee on Computing) was changed in 2000 to reflect the new mandate of the Vice-Principal (Information Systems and Technology). The central principle behind rethinking the SC-IST mandate was based on the need to support computing in teaching and learning/research needs on both the academic and administrative sides and to ensure a broader focus for the SC-IST (i.e., beyond issues associated with hardware and software). There was also a need to take a more global approach to information technology at McGill while giving one central body the leverage to make recommendations.
