Interuniversity Consortium for Arab and Middle Eastern Studies

ICAMES: an introduction

The Interuniversity Consortium for Arab and Middle Eastern Studies (ICAMES) is a collaborative project of McGill University and the Université de Montréal, together with associated researchers based at other institutions. Established in 1989, ICAMES promotes and facilitate research on the contemporary Middle East through its pursuit of four interrelated mandates:

  • the encouragement of academic cooperation and research collaboration among local scholars, and between researchers in Quebec/Canada, the Middle East, and the rest of the world.
  • the provision of research resources accessible to students and scholars.
  • the pursuit of specific research projects, under the auspices of the Consortium, on the contemporary Middle East.
  • support for the training and research of an emerging generation of scholars.

In pursuit of these objectives, ICAMES sponsors periodic scholarly conferences, workshops and visiting speakers; supports an active publications program; maintains a small but growing documentation center; encourages collaborative research; and provides facilities and limited financial support for graduate students and post-doctoral research fellows. Its research and administrative offices are located at McGill University. Professor Rex Brynen (political science, McGill University) presently serves as director of the Consortium.
