Charles E. Schlumberger
Dr. Charles E. Schlumberger, a Swiss national, is the Principal Air Transport Specialist of the World Bank in Washington DC. In this function he is responsible for the Bank’s policy and development priorities in the field of air transportation. He supervises or participates directly in several air transport projects globally, which range from air transport infrastructure financing, air carrier restructuring and/or privatization, air transport safety and security projects, and air transport policy advice to governments. Prior to his appointment to the World Bank in 1998, Dr. Schlumberger has held the position of Vice-President at Union Bank of Switzerland, responsible for international credit restructuring. Prior to his activities in financial institutions, he was the CEO of a Logistics and Transport Group in France, and worked as a lawyer on aviation related matters in Switzerland. Dr. Schlumberger graduated in 1986 with a Law Degree from Basel Law School, focusing on Aviation Law and Bankruptcy Procedures. He further holds an MBA from Harvard Business School in Boston, USA, and received a degree of Doctor of Civil Law from the Institute of Air and Space Law of McGill University in Montreal, Canada. He is also an active FAA and EASA licensed pilot and certified flight instructor, and a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society.
Rich Altman serves as Executive Director of the Commercial Aviation Alternative Fuels Initiative (CAAFI). Rich co-founded CAAFI in 2006 with U.S. Airline, Manufacturer, Airport and FAA Sponsors. The CAAFI coalition now includes over 350 sponsors and stakeholders worldwide. CAAFI sets an aviation focus for 50 energy suppliers, serving as a catalyst to accelerate technology development and deployment with investors and governments worldwide.
In just over three years CAAFI teams have facilitated and/or been directly responsible for the creation of the first new aviation fuels specification in twenty years, the development of a carbon life cycle analysis framework for aviation, the design of a globally (United Nations) accepted gated risk management for fuels development (Fuel Readiness Level (FRL), and the first initiatives by a global consortium of airlines to complete purchase agreements with fuel companies producing sustainable fuel.
For these achievements CAAFI was awarded the 2010 Air Transport World magazine Joseph S. Murphy Award for Industry Service.
In addition to his CAAFI role, Rich has served as an advisor to the FAA led U.S. delegation to the ICAO (United Nations) Alternative Fuels conference held in Rio de Janeiro (Nov. ‘09). He authored the Transportation Research Board, Aviation Environment committee's critical issues papers on Alternative Fuel and Technology Deployment. Rich presently serves as a consultant to EU alternative fuel initiative program SWAFEA.
A 43 year aviation veteran Rich spent 39 years with United Technologies / Pratt & Whitney initially as a propulsion engineer branching into Program Management and Advanced Technology Business Development.
Guilherme Freire, 36, is a Civil Engineering with Executive MBA. Joined Embraer in 2002 and worked in the E-Jet Program Management Team until 2005, during the Program certification and Entry into Service Phase. Between 2006 and 2008 he has started a new project, representing Embraer at governments, international organization and industry associations, related to foreign affairs, trade and environment. In October, 2008 has started leading Embraer Environmental Strategies, developing Embraer’s environmental protection policies, supporting business units and other areas of the Company in establishing strategies for reducing the environmental impact of its manufactured products and production processes. He coordinates the environmental issues at the Brazilian Aerospace Industry Association - AIAB, represents Embraer at Brazilian Alliance for Aviation Biofuels – ABRABA and is an Air Transport Action Group – ATAG – Board member. Prior to join Embraer, Guilherme also worked in investment banking and consultancy industry.
Richard Wynne is Director of the Policy Analysis and Management team for Boeing Commercial Airplanes (BCA). The team develops BCA’s positions on domestic and international public policy issues, as well as articulating how BCA’s strategy should adapt to changes in the global geopolitical environment. Prior to assuming his current role in May 2009, Richard was Director of New Airplane Business Strategy for the 737 replacement study. From 1996 until joining Boeing in late 1999, Richard worked with United Airlines in fleet engineering and strategic planning capacities. From 1990 to 1996, he worked in marketing and sales for British Aerospace Regional Aircraft. Richard has an undergraduate degree in political science from the University of Cincinnati and a master’s degree in international relations from the University of Kentucky.
Mr. Ian Matheson is a Management Profession with 20 years of aviation industry experience including work with ground handling companies, airlines, airports and engineering firms. Mr. Matheson has served at a Senior Management and Board of Directors level in North America, Latin America and Europe on a variety of Transportation Infrastructure Projects and Airport Management Companies. Currently, Mr. Matheson is the Vice President of Airport Development for SNC Lavalin, Canada's largest Engineering and Construction Company based in Vancouver, British Colombia and is responsible for numerous airport projects and corporate investments spanning the globe.
Dr. Ebad Jahangir
Dr. Ebad Jahangir currently works in the Environment Branch of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). ICAO is a specialized agency of the United Nations responsible for the safe and efficient development of Civil Aviation. Dr. Jahangir serves as a technical expert for international environmental policy making and coordinates Standards and Recommended Practices in the areas of noise, local air quality, and greenhouse gases.
Dr. Jahangir has more than 20 years of experience in the global aerospace industry. His areas of expertise include aviation environmental impacts, systems engineering and program management. He has a Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor and an M.S. in Systems Design and Management from the MIT Sloan School of Management.
