The Hazardous Waste Management department provides the McGill community with a Hazardous Materials (HAZMAT) Spill Response service for all types of accidental spills. Trained employees and equipment are available 24 hours/day, 7 days/week to respond to such emergencies.
Procedure for spill response
Call security (Downtown 3000, MacDonald 7777):
- Identify yourself.
- Say that you are calling about a spill.
- Be precise about the type of spill (Example: a solvent spill, liquid radioactive spill, etc.).
- Provide information about your location and extent of damages (Building, floor, room number, etc.)
This information is crucial as it tells the first responder what equipment will be needed.
In case of injury or fire
When someone is seriously injured as a result of a spill, or external agencies are required (eg. Police, Ambulance, Fire Department), call 911 immediately. You will be connected into a three-way conversation with the MUC 911 dispatch and McGill Security. Be prepared to provide the information listed above.
Emergency requiring internal help
When the situation requires internal help, call McGill Security, local 3000 for the downtown campus or local 7777 on MacDonald campus, to initiate the HAZMAT procedure. The dispatcher will intiate response by calling us. Be prepared to provide the information listed above.
Once the incident has been dealt with, a Spill Report will be prepared.
