2.5 Equality Rights and Non-Discrimination: Legal Developments and Community Realities

In October 2009, the McGill Centre for Human Rights and Legal Pluralism organized the Equality in Community workshop series [.pdf] aimed to bring together community groups and researchers to explore legal concepts of equality rights and discrimination and help rights’ advocates better understand how Canadian courts and tribunals address discrimination challenges. The main objectives of those workshops were to (i) share information about legal developments regarding equality rights, protections against discrimination and harassment and social and economic rights; (ii) connect legal concept s to the realities of inequality facing diverse communities in Montreal; (iii) develop links between university researchers and community researchers and activists.

Professor Colleen Sheppard (McGill University) and Professor Pierre Bosset (Université du Québec à Montréal) led a discussion of key developments in the legal interpretation of equality rights and non-discrimination.
