Hosted by the McGill Centre for Human Rights and Legal Pluralism, the Civil Society: Democracy, Dissent & the Law lecture will be held on October 23, 2013, at 17:30 in the Maxwell Cohen Moot Court.
This special public lecture featuring Maina Kiai, the UN Special Rapporteur on the rights to freedom of peaceful assembly and of association, is organized by the Canadian Council for International Co-operation (CCIC) and Voices-Voix, a non-partisan coalition defending dissent, advocacy and democratic rights.
Prior to the public lecture, leading academics and civil society members will be meeting for a private workshop on challenges to fundamental rights in relation to civil society in Canada. They will assess together the emerging norms related to the obligation of government to provide an enabling environment for civil society. Individuals and organizations affected by the shrinking democratic space in Canada will be able to collaborate with academics to address challenges.
