Position Context:

Provide guidance and support to a diverse student population, which is responsive to their academic needs, facilitates the pursuit of their educational goals.  Provides expertise for the development of improved tools for delivering course content, assessing student learning and student-professor interaction.  Perform and/or organize student affairs activities to support the daily operations of a faculty/department/unit, ensuring that student affairs and advising functions are carried out in accordance with established goals and objectives. Establish and foster effective working relationships by identifying needs and providing support in the delivery of service to students.  Will implement administrative and pedagogical procedures or systems to support the needs of the department. 

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Will specialize, with emphasis on the undergraduate student population registered in Biology 200, Biology 201 and Biology 202 (approximately 2600 students per year).
  • Develop improvements along with the Academic Course Coordinator(s) to the learning management system, particularly in the case of on-line quizzes used for assessing student learning.
  • Assist in the planning and development of new, as well as the improvement of existing, online interactive learning exercises for students (e.g., problem sets), which include guided step-by-step solutions.
  • With the Academic Course Coordinator(s) and Professors, develop Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCS)–style approaches to assist in delivering lecture content to students in Biology 200x-level courses.
  • Work with professors and teaching assistants to develop new and more effective methods of assessing student learning (e.g., develop strategies and approaches to replace multiple choice-style questions with alternative, higher-level means of evaluating cognitive skills).
  • Advertises, recruits, hired and train invigilators, arranges for their remuneration.
  • Produce reports on student academic issues.
  • Compiles statistics and data for inclusion in department and faculty reports including grades, exam result statistics, exemptions, etc.
  • Reviews statistical data and highlights area of concern to Professor and/or examiner.
  • Assess and resolve administrative problems.
  • Participate in special projects as required.

Education/Experience:

Undergraduate degree
One (1) year related experience
OR
DEC III
Three (3) years' related experience

Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities:

Ability to communicate effectively with students and staff at all levels and to provide assistance to students on academic related issues. Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills. Demonstrated ability to work in a computerized environment using a variety of software, including Banner, SIS and Minerva.  Ability to plan and monitor activities within tight deadlines. English (spoken and written. French (spoken).
