Development Associate (MT7888, COM1C, GR2)

Position Context:

Reporting to the Manager of Finance and Administration, the Development Associate will work closely with the School of Continuing Studies (SCS) units as well with the Dean in relation to development and alumni relations functions and objectives for the School. The Development Associate is responsible for supporting the day-to-day operations of the School’s development activities including: interface with a number of Development and Alumni Relations (DAR) central office; proposal preparation ; events support; visit preparation; prospect pool analysis; volunteer support and administration; key stewardship support; and qualifications and solicitations for Annual Fund. Assist with various SCS projects, as required and other related duties.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Identify volunteers.
  • Analyse trends and results to inform strategy.
  • Work with SCS staff in identifying and building relationships with appropriate donors and prospects to increase awareness and encourage philanthropic support for the School.
  • Understand McGill’s overall and SCS’s key fundraising priorities, in order to be an effective ambassador for the University/School and its fundraising programs.
  • Obtain appointments, qualify and solicit McGill Annual Fund gifts.  Attend cultivation and donor relations events.
  • Organize Dean and SCS staff involvement in donor meetings and development/alumni events.
  • Secure meetings with donors/prospects, organize travel (if required) and prepare all related documentation required for visit on behalf of the dean and other staff members.
  • Prepare/draft materials and correspondence related to development activities such as briefing notes, donor correspondence, proposal, etc. 
  • Working in collaboration with DAR, participate in the development and execution of ongoing alumni relations programs and events within the SCS including the organization of the School’s involvement in Homecoming events, as appropriate.- Provide support in the area of donor stewardship (i.e. coordination of donor recognition events, acknowledgement letters, monitoring reporting process, etc.).
  • Assist in managing volunteers including SCS Advisory Board. Coordinate all schedules for SCS Advisory Board and follow-up communications to volunteers. Maintain close communication and act as SCS liaison with volunteers.
  • Working with McGill Annual Fund, organize SCS annual fund solicitations.
  • Update contact reports for all prospect activity in SCS.  Prepare reports using James Database.
  • Respond to ad hoc requests from donors, SCS staff, and students.
  • Work in close collaboration with colleagues in SCS units and other SCS-based fundraising operations.
  • Assist with SCS projects, as required.

Education/Experience:

DEC III

Three (3) years' related experience

Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities:

Undergraduate degree preferred. Must be results-driven and a self-starter. Demonstrated ability to work autonomously and as part of a team with excellent interpersonal skills and savvy. Must be client-focused, with problem solving, priority setting, analytical and organizational skills. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, carry on multiple projects within the same timeframe, and to adapt and be flexible to changing circumstances. Previous experience in a fundraising/sales environment is an asset. Ability to establish client relationships, Proficient in a PC environment, using MS Office and client-server database. Strong written and oral communication skills in both English and French.
