Director, Concerts & Publicity (ADM3A)
Position Summary:
Reporting to the Dean of the Schulich School of Music, the Director leads the Concerts and Publicity unit, which provides concert and event production and management services, as well as marketing, communications and external relations for the Schulich School of Music.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Supervises the production of more than 700 events a year, including scheduling, promotion, box office, front of house, programs, on-stage, recording services, and post-concert operations.
- Responsible for halls under the jurisdiction of the Schulich School of Music: Pollack Hall (600 seats), Redpath Hall (300 seats), Clara Lichtenstein Hall (60 seats), Tanna Schulich Hall (187 seats) and the Music Multimedia Room (100 seats).
- Prepares and manages budget of approximately $1,000,000, including generation of revenues and control of expenses.
- Develops and implements modern, effective and efficient strategies for promoting the Schulich School of Music and its activities.
- Plans all communication emanating from Concerts and Publicity (promotion and publicity, media and public relations, advertising and marketing). Liaises with other units in the Schulich School (e.g. Recruitment, Development) and with McGill’s Office of Communications and External Relations when appropriate.
- Manages staff, sets expectations, monitors performance, develops efficient processes.
- Supports the academic mission of the Schulich School. Collaborates with the Department of Performance in planning concert season. Makes recommendations about the financial and technical feasibility of events.
- Generates income for the unit and the Schulich School through ticket sales and rentals. Develops new strategies for increasing revenues and for creating new sources of revenue.
- Collaborates with the School’s Development Office on special events with a development component when appropriate.
- Ensures legal standards for performing rights, intellectual property, etc. in concerts and recordings are followed.
Minimum Education & Experience:
Undergraduate degree
Five (5) years' related experience
Other Qualifying Skills And/Or Abilities:
Undergraduate Degree in Music and Diploma in Arts Administration or MBA an asset. At least 5 years related experience, having successfully held a senior managerial position in a music organization with substantial numbers of high-quality musical events. Expert knowledge of classical repertoire and instrumentation. Strong service orientation. General knowledge of culture and the arts, particularly in Montreal and Quebec milieus. Experience in financial management and budgeting. Knowledge of legal issues around performing and intellectual property rights. Background in communications and media relations, with expertise in using social media and web platforms for marketing, advertising and building visibility. Strong analytical and strategic planning skills. Proven organizational, communication, and managerial skills. Demonstrated ability to prioritize work and multitask to meet multiple deadlines in a fast-paced environment. Proven ability to work autonomously in a PC environment using word processing, spreadsheets, presentation software, e-mail and databases. Ability to communicate at a high level in both French and English (fluency and correctness in writing and speaking), including excellent proofreading skills; familiarity with Québec language laws.
