Job Summary: 
Under the direction of the immediate supervisor, performs technical duties related to the preparation and examination of pathological specimens. Screens pathological specimens and prepares preliminary diagnostic assessment. Performs gross examination of surgical specimens and prepares them for further processing and examination. Acts as resource person, resolves problems and instructs others. Maintains equipment. Maintains records.
Major Duties and Responsibilities: 
1. Logs pathological specimens and verifies completeness of information. Liaises with others to obtain and provide information.

2. Screens specimens to detect cellular abnormalities. Prepares preliminary diagnostic assessment. Prepares reports.

3. Performs gross examinations of surgical specimens. Dictates description. Selects, dissects and prepares tissue sections for further processing and examination. Photographs specimens as required.

4. Acts as resource person, resolves problems and instructs others. Provides technical guidance and assistance concerning work methods, the use of equipment and techniques, and the analysis of results.

5. Participates in the development and selection of teaching aids. Performs administrative tasks related to examinations such as arranging for invigilation and compiling grades. Participates in the correction of students' written work, such as reports and assignments.

6. Ensures compliance with safety regulations. Ensures proper storage, handling and disposal of hazardous materials.

7. Compiles data. Maintains records and files.

8. Maintains equipment and performs minor repairs. Arranges for servicing.

9. Maintains inventory. Recommends and purchases equipment and materials.

10. Keeps abreast of new developments in the field to update skills and knowledge.

11. Uses equipment such as microscope, vacuum pump, centrifuge, cryostat, faxitron machine, balance, computer, camera, dictaphone and surgical instruments.

Education and Experience: 
DEC III (Medical Lab Technology)
Four (4) years' related experience
