Job Summary: 
Under the direction of the immediate supervisor, oversees the day-to-day operations related to the care and maintenance of a specialized collection. Organizes, distributes and verifies the work of others, and participates in their training. Describes and catalogues the collection. Acts as a liaison and resource person with researchers and the public. Plans and organizes exhibits. Organizes visits and workshops. Recommends acquisition of materials for collection.
Major Duties and Responsibilities: 
1. Oversees the day-to-day operations related to the care and maintenance of a specialized collection. Organizes, distributes and verifies the work of others, and participates in their training.

2. Identifies, cleans, preserves, makes minor repairs and prepares specimens and materials. Monitors environmental conditions and proper handling of material. Identifies major restorations requiring referral to an outside contractor.

3. Describes and catalogues the collection. Administers loans and exchanges. Recommends acquisitions and initiates required action. Performs preliminary appraisal of materials.

4. Liaises with researchers and external groups such as schools, CEGEPS, collectors, and professional groups. Organizes workshops, visits, and special events. Provides information and gives talks to visiting groups and public. Investigates problems and conducts or assists in research relevant to the collection.

5. Designs and organizes exhibits and teaching demonstrations. Selects appropriate specimens and materials. Prepares text, visual aids, and display area.

6. Acts as resource person, resolves problems, and instructs others. Provides technical guidance and assistance concerning work methods, the use of equipment and techniques.

7. Participates in the development and the selection of teaching aids. Performs administrative tasks related to examinations such as arranging for invigilation and compiling grades. Participates in the correction of students' written work, such as reports and assignments.

8. Keeps abreast of new developments in the field to update skills and knowledge.

9. Ensures appropriate inventory. Recommends and purchases equipment and materials. Maintains equipment and performs minor repairs. Arranges for servicing.

10. Maintains records and files.


11. Uses equipment such as drawing tools, microscopes, magnifying glass, mounting board, environmental monitoring equipment, spectrex, fume hood, saws, air scribe, sand blaster, ultrasonic cleaner, carpentry tools, personal computer, typewriter, photocopier, audiovisual equipment, cameras, darkroom equipment and copy stands.

Education and Experience: 
DEC III (Documentation and Library Systems)
Three (3) years' related experience.
