Job Summary: 
Under the direction of the immediate supervisor, oversees the day-to-day operations of a teaching laboratory. Organizes, distributes and verifies the work of others, and participates in their training. Plans and organizes laboratory schedules. Coordinates provision of equipment and materials. Acts as resource person, resolves problems and instructs others. Liaises between staff and students. Performs duties related to administering laboratory sections and examinations. Coordinates production of course documents. Maintains equipment.
Major Duties and Responsibilities: 
1. Oversees the day-to-day operations of a teaching laboratory. Organizes, distributes and verifies the work of others, and participates in their training. Confers with professors concerning the scope and objectives of teaching laboratory sessions.

2. Plans and organizes laboratory schedules. Reviews existing experiments. Performs literature searches; reviews, selects and modifies methodology. Tests, evaluates and participates in devising new methodology and experiments.

3. Assesses equipment needs. Coordinates provision of equipment and materials. Designs or fabricates specialized equipment as required. Oversees set-up of equipment and demonstrations. Oversees equipment loans.

4. Performs a variety of specialized technical tasks within field of expertise.

5. Acts as resource person, resolves problems and instructs others. Provides technical guidance and assistance concerning work methods, the use of equipment and techniques, and the analysis of results.

6. Organizes and assigns laboratory sections. Liaises between staff and students. Resolves problems such as late assignments, timetable conflicts, and make-up laboratory sessions.

7. Participates in the development and the selection of teaching aids. Arranges for reserved library materials. Performs administrative tasks related to examinations such as arranging for invigilation and compiling grades. Participates in the correction of students' written work, such as laboratory reports and assignments.

8. Prepares and updates laboratory manuals and handbooks; coordinates the production and distribution of these documents.

9. Ensures compliance with safety regulations in the use of equipment. Ensures proper storage, handling and disposal of hazardous materials.

10. Maintains equipment and performs minor repairs. Arranges for servicing.

11. Maintains inventory. Recommends and purchases equipment and material. Ensures timed purchase of perishables and live specimens. Arranges for permits for restricted specimens.

12. Maintains records and files.

13. Performs accounting functions such as monitoring expenditures, verifying ledgers and resolving discrepancies. Forecasts costs of supplies, materials and equipment.

14. Keeps abreast of new developments in the field to update skills and knowledge.

15. Uses a variety of equipment such as balances, pH meters, pipettors, laminar flow hoods, incubators, autoclaves, microscopes, spectrophotometers, centrifuges, chromatography apparatus, electrophoresis apparatus, electrophysiological recording apparatus, cryostats, microtomes, computers and audio-visual equipment.
