Job Summary: 
Under the direction of the immediate supervisor, oversees the day-to-day operations of a laboratory or facility in the field of thanatology. Organizes, distributes and verifies the work of others and participates in their training. Performs technical duties such as autopsy and the embalming of cadavers. Removes and preserves anatomical structures. Participates in projects and experiments. Performs prosections. Selects and prepares exhibits. Acts as resource person, resolves problems and instructs others. Compiles data. Maintains equipment.
Major Duties and Responsibilities: 
1. Oversees the day-to-day operations of a laboratory or facility in the field of thanatology. Organizes, distributes and verifies the work of others and participates in their training.

2. Participates in projects and experiments. Discusses the orientation and technical demands of the projects. Reviews, selects and modifies methodology. Assumes responsibility for the technical aspects in the execution of these projects.

3. Ascertains appropriate legal authorization and protocol for autopsy. Communicates with the family of the deceased in order to obtain or furnish information.

4. Embalms cadavers and follows the appropriate techniques for their conservation and use in anatomy and research laboratories. Arranges for the final disposal of the cadavers.

5. Prepares equipment and supplies for autopsy. Performs post-mortem examination and prosection. Removes and preserves various anatomical structures. Prepares tissues for examination.

6. Prepares exhibits by selecting, dissecting, fixing and mounting prosections.

7. Acts as resource person, resolves problems and instructs others. Provides technical guidance and assistance concerning work methods, the use of equipment and techniques, and the analysis of results.

8. Prepares demonstrations for anatomy courses, including selection of prosections. Maintains inventory of specimens.

9. Compiles data. Prepares reports. Analyzes and discusses results and their interpretation with others. Maintains records and files.

10. Takes the steps necessary to ensure the security of the area as well as the proper operation of the embalming room and the morgue. Ensures compliance with safety regulations in the use of equipment. Ensures proper storage, handling and disposal of hazardous materials.

11. Maintains equipment and performs minor repairs. Arranges for servicing and major repairs.

12. Maintains inventory. Recommends and purchases equipment and material.

13. Uses equipment and tools such as cryostat, X-ray equipment, camera, and surgical instruments.

DEC III (Medical Lab Technology)
