Job Summary: 
Under the direction of the immediate supervisor, oversees the day-to-day operations of a plant science facility. Organizes, distributes and verifies the work of others and participates in their training. Performs technical duties in the field of plane science. Participates in projects and experiments. Monitors equipment and control systems. Maintains plant collections. Develops methodology. Acts as resource person, resolves problems and instructs others. Maintains equipment. Compiles data.
Major Duties and Responsibilities: 
1. Oversees the day-to-day operations of a plant science facility including greenhouses and growth chambers. Organizes, distributes and verifies the work of others and participates in their training.

2. Participates in projects and experiments in the field of plant science. Discusses the orientation and technical demands of the projects. Reviews, selects and modifies methodology. Assumes responsibility for the technical aspects in the execution of these projects.

3. Provides information concerning policies and procedures of the unit. Schedules and monitors usage of the facility.

4. Monitors computer control systems and ensures correct equipment setting with regards to temperature, humidity, photoperiod, etc. Responds to emergencies such as power or equipment failures and takes appropriate action.

5. Develops, selects or modifies methodology in order to ensure optimal growing conditions, including variables such as temperature, photoperiod, irrigation, nutrients.

6. Acquires, propagates and maintains plant collections. Monitors pest control measures. Coordinates provision of plants and plant samples for projects.

7. Compiles experimental and analytical data. Prepares reports. Analyzes and discusses results and their interpretation with researchers. Participates in devising new methodology. Maintains records and files.

8. Acts as resource person, resolves problems and instructs others. Provides technical guidance and assistance concerning work methods, the use of equipment and techniques, and the analysis of results.

9. Ensures compliance with safety regulations in the use of equipment. Ensures proper storage, handling and disposal of hazardous materials.

10. Maintains equipment and performs repairs. Arranges for servicing.

11. Maintains inventory. Recommends and purchases equipment and materials.

12. Performs accounting functions such as monitoring expenditures, verifying ledgers and resolving discrepancies.

13. Keeps abreast of new developments in the field to update skills and knowledge.

14. Uses equipment such as a computer terminal and personal computer, environmental growth chambers, water demineralizer, high pressure sodium lights, incubators, containment hoods, balances, microscopes, sterilizers, pesticide applicators, soil mixer, sprayers and electronic trouble-shooting equipment.

Education and Experience: 
DEC III (Horticulture or Farm Management)
Three (3) years' related experience.
