Job Summary: 
Under the direction of the immediate supervisor, oversees the day-to-day operations of a petrological facility. Organizes, distributes and verifies the work of others and participates in their training. Establishes priorities and schedules of projects. Coordinates execution of projects and service. Prepares quotations. Develops procedures and makes recommendations to improve unit efficiency. Prepares rock specimens and thin sections for geological analysis. Develops methodology. Designs, builds and assembles various parts, equipment and apparatus. Acts as resource person, resolves problems and instructs others. Administers accounts. Prepares budget proposals. Maintains and repairs laboratory machines and equipment.
Major Duties and Responsibilities: 
1. Oversees the day-to-day operations of a petrological facility. Coordinates the execution of experiments, projects and services. Establishes priorities and ensures adherence to schedules. Ensures efficiency and quality of output.

2. Organizes, distributes and verifies the work of others, and participates in their training.

3. Participates in the development and implementation of unit procedures and work methods. Makes recommendations to improve unit efficiency, including recommendations on staff requirements.

4. Reviews and analyzes project submissions. Advises on feasibility. Establishes time and cost estimates. Prepares quotations. Ensures deadlines are met. Liaises with clients to obtain and provide information.

5. Reviews, tests, evaluates and modifies equipment and methodology. Develops methodology. Assesses equipment needs. Coordinates the provision of equipment and set up of equipment and materials for laboratories. Oversees equipment loans.

6. Prepares rock specimens and thin sections for geological analysis. Uses techniques such as fragmenting, grinding, mounting and polishing.

7. Acts as resource person, resolves problems, instructs others and provides technical guidance and assistance concerning work methods, the use of equipment and techniques, and the analysis of results.

8. Maintains inventory. Purchases equipment and material. Maintains and repairs laboratory machines and equipment. Arranges for servicing.

9. Ensures compliance with safety procedures. Ensures the cleanliness and security of the work area.

10. Maintains records and files. Processes documents related to activities of the unit. Prepares invoices.

11. Keeps abreast of new developments in the field to update skills and knowledge.

12. Uses various equipment such as a saw, winch, grindstone, microscope, "Diamond Board" and "Logitech" equipment, homogenizer, and binocular magnifying glass.

Education and Experience: 
DEC III (Mechanical Engineering Technology or Chemical Technology)
Three (3) years’ related experience
