Data Center Consultant (IST1F)
Position Summary: 
Under the supervision of the Operations Supervisor, provides critical operations support to McGill University enterprise systems by proposing, designing and delivering solutions to ensure the ongoing operations of critical IT infrastructures. Analyses, diagnoses and takes necessary measures to solve system operations problems, including network administration technical tasks. Works with central IT infrastructure, local area networks (LAN), data communications equipment, IT security and related software. Acts as a main configurator of parameters for the IT Operations Monitoring tools, with the duties of configuring, optimizing and ensuring the on-going maintenance of IT central infrastructure CI inventory, CI dependencies, monitoring thresholds and required alerts in support of the system administrators. Works with a minimum of supervision and documents the required IT operations procedures.
Primary Responsibilities: 
  • Provide tier 1 and tier 2 technical incident resolutions for the datacenter and field operations services.
  • Assign and escalate to the appropriate IT service provider team as required. Document and maintain accuracy up-to-date information for requests/work-orders/incidents in work order system and databases
  • Troubleshoot incidents and research resolution relating to Datacenter services within the set timeframe
  • Assess and appraise the IT operations monitoring requirements. Propose monitoring solutions to the systems administrators. Plan, design, and implement the monitoring service improvements.
  • Modify & maintain monitoring applications in accordance with system administrators’ recommendations. 
  • Troubleshoot research IT resolution and identify root cause for simple to complex incidents within the set timeframe.
  • As a subject matter expert within the Datacenter operation team, handles 2nd level complexity incidents for one or many designated services
  • Process (1) service requests/work-orders accordingly to the work-instructions and procedures; (2) Datacenter CI inventory maintenance accordingly to the work-instructions and procedures, and (3) IT Hardware Support CI inventory maintenance accordingly to the work-instructions and procedures.
  • Provide training and documentation to the operations staff and supervisors. Train and mentor Datacenter casual or new employees.
  • Participate on the crossed-IT units special projects.
Minimum Education & Experience: 

DEC III (Computer Science or related field)

Three (3) years' related experience

Other Qualifying Skills And/Or Abilities: 
Experience with IT Operations monitoring tools, including: SCOM, Icinga, Spong, Oracle Grid Control and other IT operations monitoring tools; Experience in system administration, including: backup software operations, Windows server administration, Linux Redhat server administration, network administration. Strong technical background with ability to work in a fast-changing environment and to learn new tools/applications quickly. Ability to write IT process documentation. Proven ability to meet the objectives of the unit in delivering quality and efficient monitoring and incident resolution in a timely manner. Ability to handle many types of request and to ensure escalation and follow-up are done in a heavy workload environment. Demonstrated initiative and proactive approach to problem solving. Excellent analytical skills. Ability to identify, isolate and communicate problems from, and to, all levels of internal service partners. Ability to be assertive and control conversations to gather relevant facts. Team player, with demonstrated commitment to service excellence. Experienced with working environments that deal with large IT infrastructures. Flexible to work various shifts. Strong English spoken and written. French, spoken.

Additional Information: 
Although the regular shift is within business hours, must be available to take shifts on-site outside regular business hours (evening, night, week-ends, etc.) for extended period of time if required. On-call rotation may be required.
