Start of negotiations with AGSEM invigilators

The first meeting was held on June 12.  The parties introduced their respective negotiating teams. They exchanged their set of proposals and discussed how the bargaining process should unfold. The parties also agreed on a shared communications approach throughout the bargaining process.

With these major parameters having been established by both parties, they set the order of discussions to be held during the next bargaining sessions and they agreed on a calendar of negotiations during the summer. Specific dates have already been set, leading up to September.

McGill’s postdoctoral fellows now unionized

McGill’s postdoctoral fellows received their accreditation from the Commission des relations du travail on June 9, 2015. They become the third bargaining unit of AMURE/PSAC, which already includes research associates and research assistants. 

This group represents more than 400 members.  Only those postdoctoral fellows who receive research funds from McGill University are covered by the accreditation process.

HR website being revamped

The Human Resources website is in the process of being updated.  Close to 600 web pages are being reviewed and removed where the information is obsolete.  While this work is being done, the website will still be accessible; however, you may come across some broken links or a “page not found” at certain moments.  All efforts are being made to minimize any disruptions to the site during this time.  This work should be completed by the end of June.  In the meantime, should you encounter a problem which might have been overlooked during this process, please send an email to

Conciliation meetings with AMUSE floor fellows on May 27 and 29

Since the last meeting on March 20, the parties met for the first time in the presence of the conciliator appointed by the Department of Labour. The conciliator invited the parties to present their respective views of the elements that are holding back the advancement of negotiations.

Talks with AGSEM TAs suspended for the summer

The parties met briefly on May 23 in the presence of the conciliator appointed by the Department of Labour. The meeting served to assess whether an agreement could possibly be reached at this time.

Since it was not possible to reach an agreement, the parties decided to pause for the summer. The pending items are: discrimination and harassment clause, protection of teaching assistants’ hours, wage increases and duration of the agreement. The parties will reconvene in conciliation on September 1st.

Negotiations now under way with AMUSE

The university met with AMUSE/PSAC non-academic casuals on May 19 where the parties presented their respective set of proposals. Both sides’ bargaining committees were present for the start of negotiations. The parties also discussed how the bargaining process should unfold and agreed on a shared communications approach following each bargaining session. The parties later agreed on four dates for bargaining sessions leading up to mid-July.

2015 benefits statement now available

Your 2015 benefits statement is now available on MINERVA.  To access your benefits statement, log in to MINERVA, go to the Employee menu, select Benefits menu, then select Your Benefits statement. This statement includes information about your personal benefits coverage paid by you and the university in 2014. It also describes the various benefit plans and programs available to plan members.

Talks continue with AGSEM TAs in conciliation

The parties met for a day and a half day on May 12 and 13. They continued to discuss and review texts concerning some pending non-monetary items. 

The parties also discussed in great detail the reasoning behind their demands and the employer’s offers relative to monetary parameters.  Further discussion will be required before an agreement can be contemplated and the parties have agreed to meet next week. The parties will continue to negotiate in the presence of the government appointed conciliator.

Invitation to start negotiations early with MUNACA/PSAC

The Labour Relations team is getting ready to start negotiations with PSAC/MUNACA for the renewal of their collective agreement which expires on November 30, 2015.

A letter was sent to MUNACA/PSAC last week inviting them to start negotiations as soon as June 16.  The university has offered to engage in intensive negotiations during the summer in order to reach an agreement before the current contract expires in November.
